While in chat:
1) confirm with the rep that the sim card you bought has the proper minutes/texts/data
2) confirm with the rep what your existing account has for minutes/texts/data
3) ask the rep to add your new sim card stats to your existing account
4) while still in chat, make sure that everything was added correctly (can take a few minutes to update) ask the rep for the totals so that it's on the transcript
5) get the chat transcript and save it
This way if there's any question at all, you have the transcript to prove what you should have.
tl;dr Always use chat

Note: Tracfone states you must join tracfone rewards within 14 days of account creation and apply your code within that time in order to get a referral bonus.

But will you get any rewards point for adding/extending current line?
Best case scenario is that they are on WiFi all the time and all their friends are on iPhones and they use iMessage with an Apple ID instead of using their phone number to text. You can limit iMessage to not use cellular SMS text services to make it last. (If it's a green bubble, don't text unless absolutely necessary, blue bubble texts only!)
On the other hand, that 3 gigs a year won't last a few weeks with a kid on YouTube when away from WiFi.
These plans are not kid friendly. If you can teach your kid to keep their fingers off the phone and use it ONLY in emergencies and not burn out the allotments, kudos to you!
These plans are perfect for older parents and grand parents who need an emergency phone when they go out because street payphones have totally disappeared.
$24 is cheap to put an old phone in each cars' gloveboxes along with a mobile charger and have the peace of mind for 12 months.
Like I said the little guy will be on very restrict mode and almost everything will be locked down except Hangout. And if friends want to communicate his friends can communicate though that.
Only time the phone will be active is going to be off school hours. Last year was noon until 9:30PM. He did had online online schooling, so it's actually going to be from 2:30PM to 9:30PM. With his activities like Hockey and Tae Kwon Do are on pause, he will be home most of the time except, few play days and when we all go for bike riding 2-3 times per week.
Anyways. I can always add more minutes/text and there are plenty of cheap unlimited call text plans that I can go to that if we feel the need. We will see how it goes.
100 minutes a month is more than sufficient for a lot of small businesses that do this. And of course you can add additional minutes to the Tracfone plan if you run low.
