I bought this a few months back and ended up returning it. I liked almost everything about it as a budget laptop but I couldn't get past the screen. It's pretty washed out and the viewing angle was terrible. Another (minor) thing that bothered me was when open, the screen would lift the back part of the laptop up slightly presumably for a better typing angle. However, it's lifted up on tiny rubber feet that looked like would either fall out or wear out over time. As for battery life, I was averaging slightly less than 4 hours doing basic internet and tasks.

You get a slightly better processor with this one, with twice the SSD storage and twice the RAM, with a fingerprint scanner and backlit keyboard.

With the HP, you get a 1TB HDD but you would need another 4GB stick to make it reasonably useful. Both screens appear basic.

There is a HP 15.6" Ryzen 5 for $429 at Walmart with a better processor, but no backlit keyboard or fingerprint scanner, but same storage and RAM.

I have the older Asus ZenBook which doesn't have the angled base when you open the screen. I agree - it may not last long if it is propped up by tiny rubber feet. Battery life is on par with laptops at this price point.

Is this a good deal? How does it compare to the Walmart HP deal?

Any idea if the USB-c port is data only or supports charging/DP alt mode? I dislike how it's never explicitly stated..

USB-C appears data only, as you can see the proprietary power port separately on the far end on the same side.

Some laptops offer both the barrel connector and USB-C for charging, but usually not on budget models.

Agree, but this one is budget so doubt if it would.

Tried it out. Turns out OD has $15 same day shipping. Turned off S mode. Not bad for an entry level pc.

I got the F512 few months back for $349 & their almost identical same processor, ram, memory, screen resolution etc..its a good laptop for the price but be aware it doesn't have DVD tray. Wait for sometime maybe they might lower the price to $349 too.

Most modern laptops don't have a DVD tray. In its place, there is a section for an M.2 hard drive. I believe this model has a section for a second hard drive.

You get thin external DVD drives for under $25.

The second drive upgrade option is good in these budget laptops. It's been a while since I needed to use a CD/DVD disc in the laptop.

F512 is either 8th/10th Gen Intel or AMD Ryzen 3rd Gen [laptopmedia.com]. So, not inferior but just previous gen. Also, just because this is 11th Gen Intel doesn't mean it is better. This is still an entry level processor here and possibly lesser in performance than a 10th Gen i5 or a Ryzen 3/5 from last gen.

how's the build quality on these?

I picked up an open box one of these for $408
https://www.bestbuy.com/site/asus...of=openbox

and while I like it, I'm wondering if I wouldn't like a little bigger screen.

Looking for good build quality, backlit, 1080p screen for $500 or under.
