Turn your imagination into tangible projects with this 15.6-inch Full HD ASUS VivoBook laptop. The Intel Core i3 processor and 8GB of RAM deliver high-speed computing performance, while the 856GB PCIe SSD enables quick access to media files and apps. This Bespoke black ASUS VivoBook laptop features a fingerprint reader for secure access and Bluetooth connectivity to sync with wireless devices.
  • 15.6" LCD with an anti-glare surface presents a bright, clear picture. FHD (1920 x 1080) resolution yields a high level of image detail, and LED backlighting provides a thinner, more energy-efficient screen.
  • Get the processing power you need from an Intel Core i3. Multitask through you workload.
  • 8GB of memory is available to run powerful programs and games.
  • 256GB PCIe SSD drive holds your songs, photos, documents and other files. Solid state drives have no moving parts, which generally results in faster start-up times, reduced heat production and less drain on the battery than hard drives.
  • Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) delivers high-performance, cable-free networking. Share files in the Cloud, surf the Web and check in on your social media accounts.
  • Memory card reader simplifies file transfers. Accepts microSD™ cards (sold separately).
  • Features 1 USB-C port. USB 3.0 is up to 10 times faster than USB 2.0, yet fully compatible with USB 2.0.
  • 720p HD webcam lets you video chat with friends, family and colleagues.
  • Audio by ICEpower® produces rich, dynamic sound for your media.
  • Bluetooth® 5.0 technology permits wireless connections between the laptop and enabled printers, speakers, headphones and other devices.
  • Use the HDMI™ port to view content on your HDTV (HDMI cable sold separately).
  • FingerPrint reader provides secure access to your data.
  • Stays powered for up to 8 hours. Battery life will vary depending on the product configuration, product model, applications loaded on the product, power management setting of the product, and the product features used by the customer. As with all batteries, the maximum capacity of this battery will decrease with time and usage.
  • Runs on Microsoft® Windows 10 Home in S mode.
  • Free Upgrade to Windows 11 (when available, see below)*
  • *Upgrade rollout plan is being finalized and is scheduled to begin late in 2021 and continue into 2022. Specific timing will vary by device. Certain features require specific hardware, see https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/w...ifications.

I bought this a few months back and ended up returning it. I liked almost everything about it as a budget laptop but I couldn't get past the screen. It's pretty washed out and the viewing angle was terrible. Another (minor) thing that bothered me was when open, the screen would lift the back part of the laptop up slightly presumably for a better typing angle. However, it's lifted up on tiny rubber feet that looked like would either fall out or wear out over time. As for battery life, I was averaging slightly less than 4 hours doing basic internet and tasks.
You get a slightly better processor with this one, with twice the SSD storage and twice the RAM, with a fingerprint scanner and backlit keyboard.

With the HP, you get a 1TB HDD but you would need another 4GB stick to make it reasonably useful. Both screens appear basic.

There is a HP 15.6" Ryzen 5 for $429 at Walmart with a better processor, but no backlit keyboard or fingerprint scanner, but same storage and RAM.

I have the older Asus ZenBook which doesn't have the angled base when you open the screen. I agree - it may not last long if it is propped up by tiny rubber feet. Battery life is on par with laptops at this price point.

I got the F512 few months back for $349 & their almost identical same processor, ram, memory, screen resolution etc..its a good laptop for the price but be aware it doesn't have DVD tray. Wait for sometime maybe they might lower the price to $349 too.
You get thin external DVD drives for under $25.

Quote from jamesrc :
Most modern laptops don't have a DVD tray. In its place, there is a section for an M.2 hard drive. I believe this model has a section for a second hard drive.
The second drive upgrade option is good in these budget laptops. It's been a while since I needed to use a CD/DVD disc in the laptop.

Quote from Lilyly :
how is an inferior model f512 almost identical with the higher model f513?
F512 is either 8th/10th Gen Intel or AMD Ryzen 3rd Gen [laptopmedia.com]. So, not inferior but just previous gen. Also, just because this is 11th Gen Intel doesn't mean it is better. This is still an entry level processor here and possibly lesser in performance than a 10th Gen i5 or a Ryzen 3/5 from last gen.

how's the build quality on these?

I picked up an open box one of these for $408
https://www.bestbuy.com/site/asus...of=openbox

and while I like it, I'm wondering if I wouldn't like a little bigger screen.

Looking for good build quality, backlit, 1080p screen for $500 or under.

Where did you get the ZenBook for that low? Cheapest available I see is around $490. What you got is an excellent deal and ZenBook is a better version compared to VivoBook. You got a 4th Gen Ryzen 5 and will strongly recommend keeping it, especially at this price.

I take it that the RAM is soldered and no expansion options for storage in the ZenBook. Personally, I prefer a 14" 1080p vs a 15.6" for portability as 15.6" adds at least 1lb more. The larger screen is possibly easy on the eyes and also for anyone who needs a 10-digit numeric pad.

Build quality on VivoBook is not as good as ZenBook. Currently using a 7th Gen Intel i7 ZenBook which is 4 years old and running quite well.

The price at BB keeps jumping around. It will go from $699 where it is now to $549 for new, which seems to bring the Open Box Cert to $449 and Open Box Excellent to just over $400. I had been watching it for a while and saw it jump up and down several times over a 3 week period.

the current model:

https://www.bestbuy.com/site/asus...Id=6460365

has been doing similar. The mx450 of the newer one is bit better but I think the older version I got has just a bit brighter screen (300 vs 250 nits) so I wanted that.

this is just a PC for me around the house. My main desktop is in my office and I always don't feel like going in my office if I need a PC to do something, so I wanted a cheaper laptop for general surfing and office duties. Yeah, the RAM is soldered - Seems to be pretty common these days. Would sure prefer 12-16GB but figured I'd take a gamble on the 8GB. Just not sure on the 14" vs 15".

I see the ZenBook you purchased is listed as under 3lbs. If portability is important, then go with 14".

Google chrome will freeze if you open more than 1 tab on only 4GB of RAM. You wouldn't believe the number of returns our store got when people bought laptops with only 4GB and then they complained it is always freezing. It got to the point where we stopped carrying laptops with only 4GB.
To be honest, they shouldn't even be allowed to make them anymore with only 4GB.

Chrome is a resource hog. With Edge moving to Chromium, it may be good to move to Edge instead. We have a few Surface Pro at work running Windows 10 Pro with 4GB RAM and 128GB SSD. Oh well! 8GB RAM should be minimum - totally agree!

Seeing a 5% discount when opting for store pickup (hasn't been mentioned in the thread so not sure if that was always the case).

The previous HP with a Ryzen 5 5500U for $399 from Wal-Mart is a MUCH more powerful machine than this Intel i3 system.

I don't know about upper level ASUS laptops but I've noticed that their cheaper models have sub-par screens.
In the good old days of glossy and semi-glossy screens even cheap laptops had decent screen quality.

So would it be better to buy the Walmart HP deal over this? Considering the new price drop?
