No, the performance of 5650U is not close to 5850u at all. Don't make up stuffs without any basis. What you can say is that the performance of 5650u is adequate enough for most of the users, even for some demanding tasks.

In Last year, most of those posts are mine and the $250 price difference was with the barebone configuration like 128GB M.2 SSD, 8GB soldered Ram etc., so that people can upgrade by themselves. Most of those were created by me by taking the configurable options and then maximizing the components which can't be upgraded like the CPU, soldered Memory, Keyboard backlit, IR Camera etc., while keeping rest like the upgradable Ram size, SSD etc. to bare minimum.

Sweet deal! Thanks OP. Repped (again!)
Does the soldered RAM work in dual channel?

Probably 200-250$ overpriced based on last year's model for the same spec with 4750U. I cancelled mine last year due to delays. I had placed order for 850$ But thumbs up to OP for letting us know of the availability.

I feel like this is an "ok" deal. the 5600u chip performance is very close to the 5850u it looks like though.

Question: Is there really no thunderbolt port on this?
AMD still doesn't have a chipset that natively supports thunderbolt, as others have said it's Intel tech and AMD either doesn't want to license it or (more likely) Intel is dragging its feet on certifying the AMD chipset to support it.

I haven't heard failed soldered RAM to be a widespread problem. Are you experiencing otherwise?
Nope. I was just curious.

If you have a Perks at Work account, it's only $1046. Also, it looks like you'll get ~9% back in Lenovo rewards and Perks at Works is offering 6% back.

My company doesn't officially participate but I entered my corporate email anyway and it worked.

This notebook offers a slot, but since the subject was mentioned.

Maker are using lack of ram and storage space as a way to increase profits. The old days you mainly paid extra for faster cpus, now it is mostly storage. Soldered ram makes it difficult to get a system I would prefer as they tend to aim for the low cost market and over charge for adding reasonable amount of memory. If they didn't over charge for upgrading ram I would be less unhappy.

I prefer the ability to replace parts if needed versus replacing the whole machine because one of them fails or no longer meets the consumers needs. I like to at least be able to replace the SSD, wireless card, battery and the ram. I like up-gradable ram because it prevents potential waste if the consumers needs change and they find they need more ram.

Conversely and to be slightly hypocritically. I am not against soldered ram in phones or tablets. Mainly because of the cost difference I am normally willing to pay. I do dislike how so makers cripple the devices with smaller then I find reasonable amounts of ram/storage then overcharge for memory upgrades.

The Latitude 7490 seems to have replacement DIMMs, wireless and SSD, I may go that route instead of Thinkpad for my kid's school laptop. Refurbs go for as low as $450 for 16GB, 512GB etc. Seems to have Thunderbolt 3 although it was supposedly optional.

I can't find Thinkpads anywhere close to that price.

True, the only difference on my config was the 128 gb vs the 512 GB. Ram, keyboard everything else is the same.

5850U review is not required separately, it is nothing but a 5800U with Business specific and security features included, like Intel VPro. Same goes for 5650U and 5600U. And if somebody is saying that there is negligible performance difference between 5600U and 5800U then that person is wrong.
2 more cores and 4 more threads dude. It's like saying 5600x and 5800x are the same.

Thunderbolt is proprietary to Intel so you won't see it on laptops with AMD processors.

I'm debating this vs the thinkpad X1C for 1350$ ( with 4k screen and 16:10 aspect ratio and 256 ssd, no amd but intel 1165G7 ). I will be stuck with ram but I believe i wouldn't need more than 16 gb any time soon.

Does the soldered RAM work in dual channel?
If you add another stick to the empty slot then only. I think there are lot of confusion about partially and fully soldered memory and how they work in dual channel.
  • For fully soldered memory without any slot for upgrade, now a days, they are always configured in full dual channel mode. if you see a 12GB soldered Ram, like some of Lenovo Yoga 7i and 9i models, they work in 6GBx2 Dual channel mode. They are not like two separate Ram modules are soldered but actually the Ram chips (which you see at the top of a Ram stick) are directly soldered in the motherboard. Normally those Ram chips are 1GB or 2GB in size and they can be configured to run full dual channel for almost any size.
  • For cases like this where certain amount is soldered with one DIMM slot available for memory upgrade, you need to add memory to that to make it run dual channel and it will run in full dual channel mode only if the amount of memory you're adding, matches the size of soldered memory. Otherwise, it will run in hybrid Dual channel mode or Flex mode.

I am not saying it...you are quoting the wrong guy. I am just saying you don't need a separate review for 5850u as it's performance is same as 5800U and similarly 5650U and 5600U performance is same.

But you will be loosing over 60% performance if you go for a 1165G7 instead of 5850U. Now if your workload does not need that then no issue. You will also get Thunderbolt 4 support with Intel Platform.

60%, can you point me some benchmarks where you are deducing this from. Not debating you, but curious myself.
