No, the performance of 5650U is not close to 5850u at all. Don't make up stuffs without any basis. What you can say is that the performance of 5650u is adequate enough for most of the users, even for some demanding tasks.

In Last year, most of those posts are mine and the $250 price difference was with the barebone configuration like 128GB M.2 SSD, 8GB soldered Ram etc., so that people can upgrade by themselves. Most of those were created by me by taking the configurable options and then maximizing the components which can't be upgraded like the CPU, soldered Memory, Keyboard backlit, IR Camera etc., while keeping rest like the upgradable Ram size, SSD etc. to bare minimum.

Lenovo quality has gone sht, not sure if this has to do with Covid. I had the 4750U that I got less than a year ago. Replaced motherboard twice, display once, trackpad once and fingerprint reader once. Thankfully I had in home warranty repair.

The Latitude 7490 seems to have replacement DIMMs, wireless and SSD, I may go that route instead of Thinkpad for my kid's school laptop. Refurbs go for as low as $450 for 16GB, 512GB etc. Seems to have Thunderbolt 3 although it was supposedly optional.

I can't find Thinkpads anywhere close to that price.
Lol think pad is business class laptop. Not really meant for kids to go school with.

Thunderbolt is intel & Apple proprietary technology.
This is accurate. Don't know what all the down votes.

The Latitude is a business class laptop, it's perfect, it's $450 and will be way more durable than a cheap consumer laptop.

Same goes for Thinkpad but can't find any refurbished ones in that price range.

I think the question is, if the soldered RAM fails, will you still be able to boot using the spare SODIMM slot? I would hope that they engineered it that way.

They are because that information is not accurate any more. There are some desktop AMD motherboards with Thunderbolt 3 port, mainly from Asrock. Intel has transferred that to USB Consortium and the USB 4 is actually based on TB3 protocol.

Is that a serious question on the Thunderbolt with an AMD laptop?
I mean yea... Since it is on other non intel devices... intel mobile CPUS currently stink and are hot runners.... :/

I'm debating this vs the thinkpad X1C for 1350$ ( with 4k screen and 16:10 aspect ratio and 256 ssd, no amd but intel 1165G7 ). I will be stuck with ram but I believe i wouldn't need more than 16 gb any time soon.
Can you share the link to X1C for $1350 with 16gb ram ?

I haven't heard failed soldered RAM to be a widespread problem. Are you experiencing otherwise?
People don't seem to worry about soldiered RAM for $800 phones and tablets.
It is not an issue.

The thing about slots is that you need to open the laptop. Depending on ease, one can damage the finish, so it isn't always a necessity.

Since 32GB stick of 3200 mHz RAM is crazy expensive, most people will by 16GB, so the effective increase is 16GB to 24GB.

I'd feel like I would be waiting for the next shoe to drop. I'd probably sell it.

This notebook offers a slot, but since the subject was mentioned.

Maker are using lack of ram and storage space as a way to increase profits. The old days you mainly paid extra for faster cpus, now it is mostly storage. Soldered ram makes it difficult to get a system I would prefer as they tend to aim for the low cost market and over charge for adding reasonable amount of memory. If they didn't over charge for upgrading ram I would be less unhappy.

I prefer the ability to replace parts if needed versus replacing the whole machine because one of them fails or no longer meets the consumers needs. I like to at least be able to replace the SSD, wireless card, battery and the ram. I like up-gradable ram because it prevents potential waste if the consumers needs change and they find they need more ram.

Conversely and to be slightly hypocritically. I am not against soldered ram in phones or tablets. Mainly because of the cost difference I am normally willing to pay. I do dislike how so makers cripple the devices with smaller then I find reasonable amounts of ram/storage then overcharge for memory upgrades.

As soon as the machine tries to access the faulty memory, it's likely it will fail. And there's no way to prevent it from doing so. Soldered memory puts you in a corner, in that IF a chip were to fail, the easiest option is a Mobo swap.

Thanks for all the feedback, but to be clear my initial comment on this thread was simply to tell someone that the T14 does indeed have a free slot to upgrade.. as opposed to say an X13, where it's soldered only. The benefit with the T14 is that if you think you want 32GB RAM, you don't have to pay for the 32GB upfront.. you can get the 16GB now, and upgrade later if you have the need, and for much less than what Lenovo would have charged you for the upgrade. With an X13, you're stuck paying the upgrade fee. There are other reasons why I would prefer the X13 Gen 2 over the T14 Gen 1/2, but that is a topic for a different thread.

I am quite comfortable opening up my ThinkPads and really don't worry about hypothetical RAM failures which I have yet to experience. Plus I hardly ever hang on to a laptop much past warranty, so it doesn't really affect me anyway.

I'm using and had used multiple laptops with soldered memory and never had any issues. Also, never heard any widespread issues of soldered memory being faulty in any forums. I think some folks here simply exaggerate it to make you think soldered ram is bad...because they don't like it.
