No, the performance of 5650U is not close to 5850u at all. Don't make up stuffs without any basis. What you can say is that the performance of 5650u is adequate enough for most of the users, even for some demanding tasks.

In Last year, most of those posts are mine and the $250 price difference was with the barebone configuration like 128GB M.2 SSD, 8GB soldered Ram etc., so that people can upgrade by themselves. Most of those were created by me by taking the configurable options and then maximizing the components which can't be upgraded like the CPU, soldered Memory, Keyboard backlit, IR Camera etc., while keeping rest like the upgradable Ram size, SSD etc. to bare minimum.

I am quite comfortable opening up my ThinkPads and really don't worry about hypothetical RAM failures which I have yet to experience. Plus I hardly ever hang on to a laptop much past warranty, so it doesn't really affect me anyway.
There is a slight difference between buying a single laptop and a fleet of laptops. Basically industry failure rates are lets say 4%. You have to buy an extra laptop or two every twenty-five or so. Otherwise you have a employee without a laptop during the repair period.

I also prefer laptops not end up in the landfill before they have to...I understand most should end up recycled but that might not mean what everyone expects. Ram needs changes as well over the life of a notebook. People do see them as throw away now a days because they are currently cheap compared to the old days, but if given a choice of two equal models I will picked the up-gradable over the non everytime.(would even pay more)

Scary how many roll outs I have seen with too little ram. Which causes work slowdowns and actually costs firms money. Solder on it is costly to buy all new notebooks for such a simple potential fix. Now a days I do expect to replace my laptop every three years but previously I liked for them much longer.

I'm using and had used multiple laptops with soldered memory and never had any issues. Also, never heard any widespread issues of soldered memory being faulty in any forums. I think some folks here simply exaggerate it to make you think soldered ram is bad...because they don't like it.
No one talking about upgrading ram mentioned widespread issues with failure. They mentioned it was possible and disliking potential throwing away a laptop because of a ram failure being annoying. They might've mentioned that they dislike the inability to adapt the Pc to another task which might require more ram and not being able to...

Upgradable systems are flexible as needs change. Non upgradable are not...When you are a solo person selling one laptop and buying a new one might not be problematic, but a fleet of notebooks it becomes problematic. Then you have the factor of the environment. Anything we can do to prevent a laptop from going to the landfill helps everyone.

Sustainability and technology is a joke as a selling/design point,

Before I bought my first laptop I built and rebuilt multiple desktops with the same box and mixing a matching components. Laptops just can't - unless we get to a framework type laptop and even then its not really cost effective.

The only real change I've done for myself in my own habits are to step off the train in terms of cell phones. I'll be on Pixel 4 for a long as practical because it really does everything I need.

If you add another stick to the empty slot then only. I think there are lot of confusion about partially and fully soldered memory and how they work in dual channel.
  • For fully soldered memory without any slot for upgrade, now a days, they are always configured in full dual channel mode. if you see a 12GB soldered Ram, like some of Lenovo Yoga 7i and 9i models, they work in 6GBx2 Dual channel mode. They are not like two separate Ram modules are soldered but actually the Ram chips (which you see at the top of a Ram stick) are directly soldered in the motherboard. Normally those Ram chips are 1GB or 2GB in size and they can be configured to run full dual channel for almost any size.
  • For cases like this where certain amount is soldered with one DIMM slot available for memory upgrade, you need to add memory to that to make it run dual channel and it will run in full dual channel mode only if the amount of memory you're adding, matches the size of soldered memory. Otherwise, it will run in hybrid Dual channel mode or Flex mode.
I haven't seen any Yoga 9i with 12GB, but last year model C940 did.

Thanks for the info about 12GB and dual channel mode.

This "deal" is pretty ridiculous. Show me someone who would pay $2379 for this and I'll show you an imbecile. The starting price of this laptop should be $1190 with discounts applied to that... just like all the other manufacturers' laptops with similar specs. With this deal, Lenovo are actually insulting our intelligence by suggesting that any of us could believe this device could be worth the MSRP. And I say this as a longtime user and owner of multiple Thinkpads.

Why not just install Windows on an MBA?

Don't understand the question? There are fanless Surface Pro windows laptops/tables out there for many years. Like Surface Pro 5 i5 back in 2017 already fanless.
And now more brand offer fanless windows laptop/tablet.
