I just returned an open box excellent the other day which should've been an OB fair at best (no box, no stands, no remote). Found out it was a display model with over 8000 hours of screen on time (never turned off in almost a year). TV is amazing and this is a good deal, but I couldn't justify an OLED with that much usage. So if you go the open box route, make sure to check the usage hours.
The only thing missing from this TV is HDMI 2.1, but if you want an OLED with excellent picture quality then you're in the right place.
Only wanting a 55" OLED for gaming right now.
No 2.1 is a dealbreaker

Its rough to recommend this TV considering for a couple hundred more you could get one with HDMI 2.1. Like your already spending a lot of money might as well bend over and take it all.
The A80J is $600 more at Best Buy so literally 50% increased cost.

My last Bravia started freezing and rebooting just outside of the two year warranty. The one before that got black lines on it. I'm done with Sony.

Weird, I just gave away a 2007 and 2014 Sony. Both still working flawlessly. Seems you're just unlucky, probably best to stay away from Vegas.

sorry a little off topic but for those who try to purchase this TV at BB with citi credit card to extend warranty an additional 2 years ... Does buying geek squad 5 yr warranty stack with the citi 2 year to get 7 years of burn-in coverage? I thought I remember something about citi CC warranty extension only being an extension of original manufacturer warranty and since GS warranty is third-party then it would not stack. Anyone have experience getting a 7 year burn in coverage this way?

Looking for people's opinion primarily on Picture Quality.

We still use a 50" Panasonic Plasma and think its PQ is fantastic. We mostly watch TV series and some movies, though those movies are more independent or documentary vs blockbuster.

I honestly wonder how much 4k content we'd even actually be viewing and its a big reason we've stuck with the 1080p Plasma for so long.

How would this Sony compare with a 1080p Plasma?

Does HDR improve quality much? Its the most intriguing part for me personally.

Regarding HDMI 2.1, eARC and Dynamic HDR sound interesting, but I've never gamed nor do I plan to game on the TV. I also wonder if 2.1 would be of any value to our use case...even down the road.

TL;DR - Is this Sony a worthy upgrade from a very fine Plasma TV for 1080p viewing?

Yes, it will be a great upgrade from a 1080p plasma.

I wonder about this too - wether or not HDMI 2.1 has non-gaming advantages on the several year horizon or not.

I remember when I was in the market for a TV a couple years ago, people here kept saying to hold off because the prices for OLED would drop, once they became more common and there was more competition. They sure were wrong.
They have held their own for TVs but $1200 for a 55" Sony OLED would've been unimaginable even like a year ago, even last sale for an older model.

Same with 77" OLEDs being upper 2k for 2020 models, lower to mid 3k MSRP for the 2021 models.

65" have generally hovered around the 2k range, best case scenario upper 1k and held their own a lot.

Just went to local bb. Online showing an open box item in satisfactory condition for $809. The employees in the tv section said the online system is wrong and pointed towards an A9G for 1700. They said the "other one" would be in horrible condition (how would they know if they didn't have it?).

I then proceeded to buy the OB-satisfactory online for $809 from the same store. Went back to the store 30 mins later and pick it up. Will see how it looks at home

They got me with an "Open Box Excellent" one today, too. Bought it online, sight unseen...go to pick it up, and it didn't have the box or stand (couldn't tell if there was a remote packaged up with it or not...but it didn't have one).

Seeing that, I figured it was probably a display model, but thought I would still take a chance on it. I got home and saw the manufacture date of June 2020, which pretty much told me, but I wanted to confirm the panel usage to be sure. It took me forever to find my old Harmony remote, get it programmed, and figure out the equivalent of the "Display" button was on the Harmony, so that I could check the hours on it via the secret Service Menu.

It has 3,110 hours on it. Definitely a display. Anyone looking on how to check the number of hours can use this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=byzhpE-1c0o

Ran through a color checker test on YouTube, and the colors all looked pretty good. Then, I noticed a small, dark inky-looking spot on the edge of the screen. Not sure what caused that. Maybe a pressure spot from mishandling?

I was considering possibly keeping it up until I noticed the inky-looking spot. Year old display model being sold as open box excellent. LOL. Thanks, BBY.
Had the same thing happen to me, don't trust BB on that stuff anymore.

A lot of what you said may be true of the better LG OLEDs, but your response is to a post/question about the lesser A1 OLED (60Hz, no HDMI 2.1).
Thanks for that, didn't realize it was the A series. For that price, it's better to get a CX on sale.

After a week with this TV, I'm still having a really hard time getting the dark scenes to not look TOO dark (even with brightness turned all the way to max and toying with all of the different picture settings). I also swear there is perceivable input lag when on game mode even though the A8H's input lag is supposedly the exact same as my last TV (which had no perceivable input lag). It's a beautiful TV but these two things are really frustrating me.
