Great deal, although these regularly go down to $200 so the discount isn't as amazing as it seems. They're great lil units for adding some power to a campsite, but if you're going to use these for a home or rv, you should be eyeing the larger 2000w class generators.

This one has a built-in inverter versus the regular generator that harbor freight sells. Translation: Don't use the harbor freight one for sensitive electronics

Had one for 6-mo. Bought at HD sale. It is very quiet, starts on first pull and was able to charge phone and run a cooling fan. Very good on gas, easy to carry around. No real smoke or strong exhaust smell from mine. I've ran it on Super tech synthetic 10w30 oil. First oil change was done after 2 hours of break in running. Was working great since then.

On average, depending on their size, home refrigerators need around 1000-2000 starting watts. The generator that can deliver at least 2000 starting watts will be sufficient to run both the refrigerator and the freezer without problems.

Probably has something to do with CARB compliance. Since air gets thinner with altitude, the fuel/air mix needs to change for a given engine power. Sometimes an adjustment to the carburetor is sufficient to continue to run well, though at very high altitudes a part swap (of the fuel jet) may be necessary.

Starting load is usually twice or more running load. And that 1/3HP doesn't take efficiency losses into account. That 1/3HP pump could easily take 500 watts running and over 1000 starting.

Just looked at my portable AC unit and it says it consumes 9.5A at 115V. So, close to 1100W to run. It doesn't list starting current but probably at least 50% more? So looks like I'd need a 2000W to run the portable unit. Posting here to see if I did this right.

The jet size in the carb. You might be able to get a high altitude jet for the carb.

I have a very similar one, the Earthquake IG800W. Mine is fairly quiet but it's not silent. I built a baffle box out of plywood with an intake maze and an exhaust maze with a heat shield. On the intake side I bolted on an 8" duct fan and a household outlet. Inside the box is a cord that connects to the generator and energizes the outlet and the fan. It allows it to run nearly silent and I've even had people ask me how I'm running 110v equipment when camping because they cannot hear any generator running. The amount of air flow from the 8" duct fan is perfect and I can run it for hours under load and it never gets too hot inside.

This still needs to be said EVERY SINGLE TIME. My friend works in an ER and he said every time power was out for a while, he never failed to see all the CO poisoned idiots from running generators in their garages.

I would say 3000ft is probably fine, now 6000ft and you will need leaner carb jets.

You are correct. While sometimes the plate will only list maximum running current, the unit itself might be a bit less (depending on environment). Only way to tell is with Kill-a-Watt.

I have this generator and 1000W is max surge. It is rated 800W continuous and before buying I read that someone took it apart and the inverter module is really only good for 700-750.

Therefore I wouldn't expect anything more than 700W for reliable operation.

2000W would be a much safer bet (although more expensive) for your portable.

Agreed. I have a 1000w unit and a 2000w unit... because the 1000w unit isn't really good for anything. All the fun appliances are over 1000w and most small stuff can run off batteries.

They even say to try to run them at 50% load for best efficiency, so even if you only need 1000w, the 2000w inverter will be quieter.

This one makes sense if you're only recharging batteries, though.

This is not a bad find at this price but not a generator I would trust. Do a nice thorough break-in before the warranty expires so you know you don't have a lemon. Other than that, easy to start and quiet. Probably not going to get 1000 watts out of it tho.

Only "truly quiet" generator you can get is a Honda, and you can expect to pay about $1000 for their 2000w model. Or just live with a off brand for $300.

I wonder if you could just stick an external mount muffler on it. I have a 3kw inverter and it's too loud to use at camp unless im in the desert or right next to the ocean. I hate the sound of it. (it's the champion) Luckily I can go forever (minus AC/Microwave) on Solar in my trailer.
