$998 for me. What's so special about this TV anyway? Looks really nice, but it seems like there are numerous options in this size for the same or less money, even at $799.

Not terrible, especially for use as a big computer monitor (it's essentially 4 24" 1080p screens). I wouldn't recommend it for gaming though.

I clicked through and it was Prime delivery on Wednesday for $799. Skipping due to lack of 2.1 for my PS5.

The X950H has been on my watch list due to it NOT being OLED (HTPC + burn-in hesitancy with wife+kids who leave it on constantly). I've also got a very shallow but wide living room, so viewing angles are important and this model has Sony X-Wide.

EXCEPT according to RTings the 49 does NOT have X-Wide... Otherwise this would have been perfect.

I'd worry about the paragraph on rtings above the note about the 49":

"Mediocre viewing angles. Despite having Sony's 'X-Wide Angle' layer to improve viewing angles, gamma shift still happens fairly quickly when moving off-center. It should be okay for most rooms, but not for large rooms with wide seating arrangements."

It sounds like "x-wide" is a marketing solution to an engineering shortcoming.

I returned a Best Buy floor model LG OLED because it had burn-in that I couldn't detect until I got it home (I found out that it had 14,000 hours on it which means that they just left it on 24x7). The OLED is obviously superior tech but the 950H is pretty close with some pic adjustments. People ask if it is an OLED.

But I hear that the new HiSense TVs are phenomenal.

EDIT: OLEDs are a pain in the a** because they are heavy, flex and bend. Figure on at least two people to get a TV in. Even then you'll be white-knuckling it. Scary for something so expensive.

I've had to move my OLED twice. I've been terrified both times. But hoo boy is that picture amazing. You know when Dethlok sings about coffee? Duncan Hills? Blacker than the blackest black times infinity? They're actually talking about my tv.

rtings way, way way oversells how much viewing angles matter in the real world. I love their tests, and I reference them every single time I'm considering any model of TV (even in business), but the amount that viewing angles matter IRL is way overblown. I swapped my sony x800h (ips) for an x900h (VA) and have never once thought "wow this looks less good" from any angle. Even in best buy, you can compare. Once I realized that, I started to dismiss all the viewing angle scores when considering TVs.

You should consider the Hisense U6G or one of their similar models. They're quite good.

This is coming from someone who owns a Sony X900H, but only because I got the 75" for like $1300 and I have quite a unique use case.

The 2021 Hisense lineup is actually really good, and is a MUCH better value than the comparable Sony models. They're not *better*, but they're extremely similar and half the price. https://www.rtings.com/tv/tools/c...shold=0.10

You'd actually be able to get the 65U6G for less than this x950 sale.

They'll last half as long too.

Ellimis is correct in that the concern is not one of engineering, but of the physical limitations of the technology, specifically the type of panel (IPS vs VA). Any screen, be it your phone, or your laptop, or your television, is a tradeoff of elements such as color reproduction, response time, shift from off-angle viewing...

And Ellimis is also likely correct in that I really need to get off my duff and see them in person. But I really like the problem solving, the 'hunt', so of course I devour all the reviews etc. My living room is only about 8' deep yet 20' long. Any kind of group viewing will have half the participants looking at the screen from a solid 45 degree angle, hence I do have color/gamma shift concerns. OLED would solve that problem, but I'd have a different burn-in problem given the HTPC has Pandora pulled up 24/7.

Sony X-Wide or Samsung's Ultra Viewing Angle would be my current compromise preference.

You really need to have a comparative TV to show you what you are missing

Trust me, if you have an OLED in your home, you will really notice the lack of viewing angles and blooming on your LCD

I like Rtings as a reference point, but theres some review recommendations that are completely biased to the reviewer himself. I generally have to go to the store to check if I actually like the TV or not.

Many TV's that are recommended "good" in the budget category need subjective viewpoint before blindly purchasing. The mid/high end TV's are more forgiving due to price point, superior technology (FALD) and better Q/A.

I chose the x950g (same panel as the 950h, as you're probably aware) for literally the same reasons you're citing: (htpc, family that will occasionally leave things paused.

For my money, it was the best mix of picture quality and features, without having to worry about a panel lottery and returning something so big and fragile.
