This simply cannot be beat performance wise, the 6800M is a monster. Ram upgrade is mandatory, and that'll put this to around 1600+ all things combined which is a steal as it competes with some of the lower/mid level wattage 3080's. External monitor will get it even closer but isn't required depending how CPU bound the games you play.

Severe QC issues riddle this laptop, namely liquid metal seeping onto the GPU and frying the laptop. Be ready for returns/repasting, worth overall

The bad reviews are mostly from a bad initial batch that had liquid metal applied incorrectly (causing component electrical shorts and overheating). They've since resolved that issue. I purchased this laptop for $1485 and it runs flawlessly, outperforming most 3070s and low TDP 3080s. The performance receives a boost from upgrading the ram to better timings (I purchased Crucial Ballistix CL20) and directly connecting an external monitor to the USB C port (since the USB C port directly connects to the GPU, whereas the HDMI port runs through the integrated graphics). This laptop also has about 9 to 11 hours of (non-gaming) battery life. It's been running extremely stable and I have no regrets at all.

Kinda want to pull the trigger on this deal however, is the poor Raytracing performance of the 6800m something to be considered? Won't most games be headed in the raytracing direction over the next few years?

yea i got lucky i picked one up still waiting for it to ship. for $100 more its just a better all around deal. i use to like asus laptops but i will never buy a laptop with liquid metal. the risk is too great for 3-5c.

I bought one a couple weeks ago. Has been great so far..I had one mystery reboot, but nothing more than that. This thing is a power house and the battery lasts a long time. I ran it througha bunch of benchmarks just to pressure test it and dang, it's fast. Upgrading from a 2070 msi I previously had and it's an incredible upgrade.

Also, I haven't opened it up or anything, but might to eventually add another hard drive. And as for upgrading the ram, read up on that. I don't think it's worth the cost, you don't get that great of a performance boost from what I read.

Bought this laptop end of July. I got mine received middle of July and I haven't had any QC issues since because it's a new batch. All the reviews of liquid metal, qc's issues and all that are basically those individuals who bought the open box. Those open boxes already came from defected laptops that already had QC issues to begin with. Best Buy just repackages that crap.

Overall, bought right off the shelf, been using it ever since with no issues. Everything stock since I'm not upgrading the ram til way later.

I had this brand new laptop for two weeks after the last FP deal. I returned it on day 15 because I found a better desktop build at the same price. My thoughts:

Pros - Amazing performance, Beautiful screen, Good value for the money
Cons - Very loud (aren't all gaming laptops?!), More tinkering necessary than a desktop to get full performance, I was hoping for 3070/3080 performance but it wasn't quite there

Overall I was impressed with it but I'm happier with the desktop I got. (Ryzen 7 3700x and RTX 3080) For $1500 this is a very good buy. (but not a best buy... pun intended)

P.S. I should add that I likely would have kept the laptop had I not stumbled on the desktop deal.

I do agree with geezeefosheezee that it is best to get a laptop in the same region for warranty sake and Legion 5 Pro (L5P) is a better-suited laptop, especially for schools with a 16:10 screen ratio and Nvidia GPU. BUT here's my two cents, I just literally cancelled my L5P this morning and keeping this laptop. The sole reason is that at this moment, we are looking about 2 months of waiting before Lenovo start shipping L5P. And by the time that Lenovo start shipping their laptop, there could be a better for another laptop that ship much sooner.
If your son needs a laptop at the moment and doesn't want to spend too much, I would recommend getting Inspiron 16 Plus. Regardless, I would definitely not get this laptop for your son for the mentioned build quality.

GPU with Unigine Heaven hit max 83C on "Turbo" mode (2C better than LM, per the Jarrod bench)
CPU with Cinebench 23 hit 69C single core 10 minutes and 90C with multicore 10 minutes, (also better than Jarrod, but I think he did 30 minutes) on "Manual Mode"

Both tests were 21C ambient.

I used a QHD Alienware for years, and recently switched to a 1080p Razer with a lovely screen (and 144hz). However, I really really missed the extra real estate. Although the L5P has a slightly lesser CPU/GPU, that WHD+ 16:10 ratio screen (165hz?) is killer.

Due to no MUX and poor quality stock RAM the 6800m performs closer to a 3060m. Its a joke that you have to buy new ram and use an external monitor, and even then you only reach 3070m levels.

Hard pass. Wait for them to fix these issues with a gen2 or buy another laptop.
