Not really. This cost 60% more and the only real spec bump is 16gb ram. This is for Thinkpad fanboys who wants to use Chromebook. I normally would say just get a regular Thinkpad and convert it to Chrome OS but Google basically cut that route off already. Neveeware is the only distro left and it doesn't support Android Apps.

Or wait for the Galaxy Book Flex2 Alpha 13.3 to go back on sale for $680 if you need 16GB or 13.3"
Do the others that people are recommending have the military grade durability of the ThinkPad? If they do then they're probably better deals. If not then for people who want something durable then this is a good deal. The other reason to get this is for people who want a chromebook with a Trackpoint.
Some programs dont work or dont work well with chrome os. If all you need is web browsing, a $200-300 chromebook is great. But for this price I'd want it to do everything without issue.
For the hardware this is priced respectably. The AMD Ryzen 7 3700C is on par with the Intel i7 and has better graphics than Intel's integrated garbage.
While I generally agree that this is pricey for a traditional Chromebook, there are numerous changes coming down the pipe that will make Chrome OS one of the best OS's available.
1. Chrome OS already supports Android apps and it's getting better continually.
2. Native Linux support in Chrome OS (including Linux GUIs) will be released shortly.
3. Native Windows app support is coming to Chrome OS.
With Steam supporting Linux, the availability of games will improve substantially. Eventually Windows support may offer native Windows gaming capability.
Alot of the complaints are from Chrome OS haters who either don't understand what it is, or are simply Windoze fanbois who hate on everything not-Windows.
Google needs some serious leadership. Their ChromeOS is so direction-less IMO - wasn't the whole point of Chrome OS to have a simple/lightweight OS that can run on the cheapest of hardware? And here we have a Ryzen 7 w/ 16GB RAM just to run ChromeOS and a paltry list of lightweight Apps. The last official Google Chromebook they released was like forever ago and is still being sold in stores - so they literally just abandoned the whole thing. And not to mention the Pixel Slates that had so much potential, but just left to slowly die. And then of course, partners had to design the machine's motherboards so that you can't install Windows on it! This would've been a smokin deal if you can install Windows on it!

Pardon my ignorance…but what do you mean they cut it off?

No more authentication with Google and no more syncing with Google services. They mad some api changes a few months back. Nvweware distro(got bought out by Google) are only one that still support it but that one doesn't have android support. FydeOS and arnoldthebats build will not let you sign-in to Google services.

Did the OLED version of this get taken off the market? I have an OLED X1E2 that's beyond amazing but there isn't a ChromeOS option for sale today that's OLED. The Lenovo with the same frame but has an OLED panel is "unavailable "
