Depends on Provider. Xfinity charges $25 for xFi Complete Unlimited Data Rental. If try use my own equipment they charge $30 for unlimited data which means paying more.

I agree that 3.0 should be fine, but in my area, Spectrum would not activate a DOCSIS 3.0 modem even on a 100Mbps plan and made me go get one of their 3.1 modems. Not that using my own modem would have saved me any money (no rental fees in Spectrum plans), but I like having control of my own devices, which the Spectrum-provided modems do not have access to the management interfaces. I tried 2 different 3.0 modems at different times, and both were no-go.

That's gonna change after 7 year merger agreement ends 2023. Datacaps and Rental charges coming back for Spectrum they tried last year during.

In my experience, modems are supported as long as they are activated and in use. But if you try to activate service, that modem must be listed as compatible. Not sure if they let you swap as backup. I would guess no. As of current, the CM500 is still listed as compatible for me.

Good deal. I'm in Wilkes Barre Pennsylvania and service electric now charges 3.50 a month rental for a basic cable modem

You can even get them to activate a modem that was compatible and they say it no longer is. I've done this a few times with comcast. They will tell you a sb6121 is not compatible, and refuse to activate it (it tops out around 100mbps so its old but its perfect for their cheapest plan and you can pick these up for a couple bucks at a thrift store). It works fine on comcast, you can just tell them its a sb6141 or sb6183 and give them the mac and it will activate and work fine.

Provider support always will blame if it's own customer equipment and they have reason, because they cannot guarantee normal work. Same model can be made on different Chinese factories from absolutely different parts. And in ref.device case - who know how it was repaired.

My provider gave me modem for free use, I need to return if switch to diff.company but no any monthly fee. I think this is the best solution.

Comcast no longer supports Motorola SB6121 (DOCSIS 3.0, 4x4, capable of up to 343Mbps). And for that reason on ebay it goes for about $10 shipped.

Sb6121 still works well.

I'd still need a wireless router to get WIFI off of this correct? Thinking about getting this and stop renting my Modem from Xfinity but it is a Modem/Router.
