This will not happen. Straight out. Why because all major broadband companies still have and operate earlier tech in the Nodes and Headends. If you don't know what that is, google it. Hence, the 3.0 which is relatively fully operational in XFINITY, Verizon, ATT, spectrum and Cox will be coherent in the next 5 to 6 years. But hey. Maybe your area is using different tech from all of us around the 🇺🇸. I do work for one of those companies and worked at Verizon for 4 years in their NY headend. 👍

I work for xfinity as a cable tech. These will work on xfinity. Only downside is it's refurbished. If Mac address of refurbished unit is still tied to an account, it will be an issue to add modem to your account.

Working in cable you still see the occasional docsis 2 modem in the homes... Doubt they will ban docsis 3 anytime soon. Also 16 channels should be good for up to 500mbps download if you pay for higher speed you should really look for more channel bonding or docsis3.1 if anyone is curious

For Comcast/Xfinity, to find list of compatible modems:
https://www.xfinity.com/support/devices/#unauth

For my zip, this modem isn't listed as compatible.
Same, but I'm using the SB6141 which also isn't listed and it works fine (Houston, TX on Comcast). If you need it you could always buy and return if it doesn't work.

I'd still need a wireless router to get WIFI off of this correct? Thinking about getting this and stop renting my Modem from Xfinity but it is a Modem/Router.
Yes you need a router as well, they're not terribly expensive though

Will this work on Spectrum, checked their list of approved modems and it's not on it?

The old TP-LINK that I am running currently is not on that list either, they never gave me any issues to register it.

I had one of these on Mediacom for a short time. When I started having issues Mediacom told me they cant read signal levels from this model remotely in order to help troubleshoot and also told me that they wouldn't be sending any updates to it's firmware. So, it's old tech that still works but don't expect much help without a tech having to be sent out.

Check this out: https://www.reddit.com/r/Comcast/...ow_end_of/ [reddit.com]

Comcast no longer supports Motorola SB6121 (DOCSIS 3.0, 4x4, capable of up to 343Mbps). And for that reason on ebay it goes for about $10 shipped.

I bought a used Docsis 3.0 16 x 4 modem few days ago for $20. I felt bad that I paid more for it but it looks like you can't get free shipping (unless you buy more than $35) or do pick up so I guess this is not that much of a deal.
It's hard to argue with this price. Yes, the general trend for D3.0 is for ISPs to require:
  1. A minimum bonding group ability for any new devices brought onto their network
  2. A minimum bonding group capacity relative to your tier of service
But if you're the customer hanging on to the lowest tier of services (with download speeds of 25-200 Mbps) this modem deal is perfect for you since it will pay for itself in about two months.

If you care about speed and getting the best performance out of your provider you definitely must consider a D3.1 modem if that service is available in your area. Otherwise this is a great deal for the slickest of Slickdealers.

Good luck!
Jon

Its what i am using for spectrum. Their speed in my are tops out at 100mbpm so this has no trouble. It just isn't a "supported" as in trouble shooting issues. As if they are any help anyway if you have your own equipment

You can even get them to activate a modem that was compatible and they say it no longer is. I've done this a few times with comcast. They will tell you a sb6121 is not compatible, and refuse to activate it (it tops out around 100mbps so its old but its perfect for their cheapest plan and you can pick these up for a couple bucks at a thrift store). It works fine on comcast, you can just tell them its a sb6141 or sb6183 and give them the mac and it will activate and work fine.
Interesting. I will keep that in mind. But shouldn't the modem activate automatically? So, basically, you just tell them the modem won't activate and they ask for the model and MAC and it worked after you tell them a newer model?

Correct. Renting modem is expensive in long-term.
I recommend to have diff.devices for diff.roles, because if combo modem/router broken you lost everything. So you need 1. modem like this one, check if it's will work for you. Home router is 2nd device.

I'm paranoid IT-guy so have: modem in free use from ISP, firewall - miniPC with 2 LAN-ports under Sophos XG Home Free, PoE-switch, cables, 2 Access points.
BTW, for bigger house WiFi should be covered by zones, 1 WiFi home router in center are good only for small apts like student studio.

Only Comcast owned modems activate automatically through their app. I've never gotten a customer owned modem to activate through their app. I've actually argued with reps on the phone because they keep telling me to use the app and the app refuses to activate non Comcast owned modems, I finally figured that out when one rep finally told me only Comcast owned modems will activate with their app and that's why it's never worked for me. The manual process has the reps ask you the model which I assume they just look up to see if it's compatible before they actually try to activate it which is why telling them it's something else will get them to try the activation.

You used to be able to plug the modem in and just try to use it and it would direct you to a Comcast login page to activate the modem and that worked fine but now it just tells you to use the app which doesn't work. You also used to be able to go to a specific Comcast url that would activate your modem and now that as well forces you to use their app.

I agree that 3.0 should be fine, but in my area, Spectrum would not activate a DOCSIS 3.0 modem even on a 100Mbps plan and made me go get one of their 3.1 modems. Not that using my own modem would have saved me any money (no rental fees in Spectrum plans), but I like having control of my own devices, which the Spectrum-provided modems do not have access to the management interfaces. I tried 2 different 3.0 modems at different times, and both were no-go.
They seem hostile to customer-owned modems period. I just now tried to get them to activate a brand new Netgear CM1100, which is DOCSIS 3.1. First they said the CM1100 isn't supported, and then when I pasted the link to their page that says it is, they said that the MAC was invalid. This was through chat so one would think they could handle copy/pasting a MAC. Man, they suck.
