I own the 5.1 premium set and can say it's well worth it for the price. I paid retail price for it and I still think that was worth it. For this sale you can see it as ~$21 per piece. Which is a great deal!

I have the 5.1 channel option and I love them. Haven't tried a more expensive option but for my smallish room they are perfect

Looks like they have upfiring speakers for a 5.1.2 system vs the 5.1 system. That would be the price difference

It looks the system with the sub is definitely a upgrade just sub vs sub. Can't comment on the other speakers. I have the 12 inch sub as a stand alone and its pretty solid

Yes you would definitely require a receiver to power this speaker system. Specifically one that supports 5.1.
Though would need one that supports Dolby Atmos if you're going for the 5.1.2 system.

I think that 5.1 system is Monoprice's version of the Energy Take 5 system. Both are pretty good but best suited for smaller rooms.

Have the premium set in my basement and love it. Also, the speakers have a more discrete logo than the lower tier set does.

Upgrade over an htib? Or a side grade? I have an old jvc thd50. I was looking to maybe upgrade the center channel with the other mono price deal.

I have components for a 3.1 and was going to expand it to a 5.1.2 Atmos setup for my basement, but buying this +2 in-ceiling speakers just seems so much easier.

Yes, especially the sub- both are 8" but this one as a 200 watt amplifier (vs 60 in the $80 set) and handles frequencies from 30Hz (vs 50) to 150Hz.
As another mentioned this is Monoprice's Energy Take 5 clone, which was the gold standard in budget Home Theater in a Box.
If you are going to go through the trouble of wiring up a 5.1 system, spend the extra $50- this will give you a much fuller sound than the $80 set.
