It has a really odd start that takes a long time to get into (a lot about the cultural revolution, etc.). By the end of the book it's screaming on all cylinders, and the next 2 books are tight and perfect. Amazing series, but it has a really terribly slow start. You should go back to it. I came here to comment this exact thing to folks - stick with it.
Best sci fi books i've ever read. The first book is a little slow and frankly pretty different from other 2. Power through first book because it gets crazy
This book was average but the whole series is excellent. The author didn't find his footing until the second book but don't skip the first book because it sets up the whole series.

I tried to read it and abandoned after about 1/2 way through. I find it drags and not engaging. A friend who read it in its original Chinese form thought it was decent. So unless you can read the novel in its native tongue, I would pass.

The first half of the book 1 sets up the stage. It gets way better from there.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the whole Remembrance of Earth's Past trilogy. There is another spinoff by a different author that started out as fan fiction and has been published and blessed into canon by Liu. I recommend that one as well.

I dropped in somewhere in the second book. After the "unfolding syphons" part. I felt that the story was a distant second to him having to explain any and every minute scientific phenomena. The way he had the characters explaining it to each other felt unrealistic and annoying because it stopped the story for many pages every time.

I read the first book. Started off great but the second half took some will power to get through. Then I switched over to re-reading Dune (a long-time favorite) and then Dune Messiah and Children of Dune and I'm getting tired of the Golden Path mumbo jumbo already. When I wrap this one up I will either go on to God Emperor or Dune or maybe, just maybe, back to Liu's The Dark Forest. I don't have the prescience to know right now.

Edit: Reading user reviews of The Dark Forest on Amazon, I think I might rather switch than fight.

I would echo what the others mentioned already and add that the first chapters weren't easier to read in Chinese either. It's just really abstract.

I tried this, but on Audible, and had issues with the names. I'll try this because I think reading them will make them click better than hearing unfamiliar sounding names.
