I think the purpose of these deals is not for immediate use but perhaps a year later when the conditions have improved. We just got back from the Maldives after using a travelzoo deal bought last year.

The question though is whether this is a good deal if you were traveling later when the world is vaccinated and CoVid becomes similar as flu (dangerous but beatable with vaccines + medications). We've been to Bali precovid in recent years and it was incredibly cheap. Not as cheap as Combodia, but on par with Thailand or cheaper than Thailand. Ubud had some wonderful b&bs for quite an authentic experience and Kuta had plenty of 5 stars around $100 a day range (cheaper if you have some time at hand and shop around using Priceline etc.) Most hotels included wonderful breakfast with traditional balenese and western spreads.

Feel free to ask me anything in this thread or message me, and I'll try to answer it my best.
I have plans to go to Bali with a group of friends in December. The trip is being organized by a friend with dual American/Indonesian citizenship who owns and manages rental properties over there. I've been hearing that "legally" the only way to get into Indonesia is with some sort of work visa. I'm assuming that my friend knows this, and he'll put together some sort of visa application listing me as his business partner or something. My question is: how strict is this process? Does Indonesia attempt to do any due-diligence regarding fraud, or is the process akin to getting a medical cannabis license where you just fork over some cash and they tell you exactly what to write to get approved? Would you recommend moving cash around to different bank accounts to simulate direct-deposit business dealings or doing anything similar in case I need to validate a "work history"?

I should be good with all the other requirements. I've been vaccinated, and I'll be getting my booster about a month before the trip.

My friend tells me that the corruption in Indonesia is so bad, it would make a Central American politician blush. Have you heard any stories about tourists getting extorted regarding visas/covid when they land? Would it be wise to bring a bunch of rupiah with me on the flight in case I have to dish out some bribes? I'm pretty sure I'll be flying into Jakarta. Not sure exactly how I'll get over to Bali. Hopefully I won't run into any highwaymen.

Maybe for ex-pats or other nation's citizens living in Indonesia.
It's about six (6) months' earnings for the average Indonesian citizen.

What in the world are you talking about??
Either that's an imaginary friend, or you need a new friend.

(My sis-in-law is Indonesian, I have a close friend temporarily in Indonesia, and my cousin traveled frequently for work and leisure.)

I agree that this is the likely intent of these deals… but one should also consider that many travel providers have been hurting tremendously during COVID. These sorts of pay-now-benefit-later arrangements are attractive to companies that are on the verge of going out of business and need a Hail Mary, because what do they have to lose? It may be the lifeline they need, but they can also just disappear into the night leaving you with a worthless prepaid stay at a property that no longer exists. Buy with care and protect your purchase.

No comment on the deal but for US citizens bali is a terrible choice. I've traveled to 51 countries and Indonesia as a whole is great but Bali is very very overrated. All the aussies I met there were wondering why Americans travel that far for Bali. So many better locations. Go see Indonesia but avoid the crowds and tourist trap of Bali.

That's why you don't stay anywhere aussies are. Away from Denpasar or ubud.

Phuket is partying, Bali is more relaxing.
