No way those are comfortable or well balanced...

"Hey, what's a clever way we can reduce material cost?"

"I know! Hollow out the middle of the handles! Sure, functionality will suck. But just think of all that sweet, sweet yen we'll save!"

I thought the same, but the reviews seem to indicate they are comfortable. An advantage is that there are no other parts to loosen or fall off.

Amazon [amazon.com], BB&B, HomeDepot all sell this set for $230.

NSF certified....and Red Dot Design award. Seems like a nice deal.
I am a bit concerned about the comfort of the handles with holes....but none of the reviews I see complain about that.

Any idea if this is online only?

Thanks

Just FYI, the Red Dot award doesn't really mean anything - companies basically pay for them to give them that award. (a "registration fee" and then a "winner package" fee)
https://www.red-dot.org/cd/participate

Looking at their search page, they've "awarded" 2306 products for this year so far:

To give an example, this generic nappy packaging [red-dot.org] is the winner of a Red Dot award.

I only shop for knives in person, and bring a handful over overripened tomatoes to test. But we are talking about Costco, so returning them in 2 years shouldn't be an issue. The only thing crazier than buying tools, i.e. these knives, you will use almost every day, is buying a car you've never test driven. People these days, I swear!

If your method works so well, why do you need to keep shopping for knives?
And even if you do need to, why not purchase another one of what you already know is good?

It's not only a matter of comfort. Those holes could be difficult to clean, specially since forged knives should not be washed in the dishwasher.

These aren't bad but unless u need them out for display your better off buying 2 good knives like victorinox, wusthof, henkells or any of the decent jap knives that pop up from time to time. Notice how they make a big deal about german steel like that's a real thing. You can get great steel from any country even china if you know where to look.

I guess hypothetically the steel could have been forged there and turned into knives in China.. But that probably didn't happen.

It's just a knife, not your kids. Real people wash them in DW.

I think realistically that is what happens... but every knife maker also has their own heat treating process that affects the quality and durability.
