advantage of this HP over the lenovo
1. This HP has usb-c with DP and PD, meaning you can actually use a dock to both power the laptop as well as having 4K60hz output over the usb-c. The lenovo usb-c has neither DP or PD function
2. This HP has HDMI 2.0. The lenovo only have hdmi 1.4 meaning that lenovo has no way to output 4K60hz at all while with the HP you can actually connect two external 4K screens and run both at 60hz. If you are the type that want a laptop that can run multiple external screen, the HP beats the lenovo by a mile
3. This HP has dual ram slots meaning you will be able to upgrade all the way to 64GB ram and run them in dual channel. The lenovo has a built in 4GB soldered ram with 1 ram slot (hence it has a weird 12GB ram configuration with the costco model because that one ram slot has an 8GB module). So with the lenovo you are limited to 40GB ram and its not dual channel.

advantage of the lenovo:
1. Slightly bigger battery
2. Slightly brighter screen
3. Black color keyboard is better with white backlit and visibility compared to the HP silver keys not as well visible with the backlit.

Not sure if anybody has already answered this but this deal is better than the Lenovo IdeaPad 3 deal you're referring. IdeaPad 3 15 is equivalent to HP 15 and lowest tier in their main line of consumer laptops. It has 4GB soldered ram and only one upgradable ram slot, only HDMI 1.4 port and the Type-C port is a 5Gbps data port, not supporting display out and charging.
This Pavilion 15 has two ram slots, supporting 64GB of memory (32GB is the max HP sells this model with, not maximum supported), hdmi 2.0 port and fully featured Type-C port, supporting 10 Gbps data, display port 1.4 (4k at 120 Hz) and power delivery charging which can be used to charge the device with any 45W+ PD charger.

Why does HP keep releasing these decent laptops with a 250nits screen?

Nice specs but 250nits is a deal breaker for me.

Not that black and white. This has 2 user upgradable ram slots vs fully soldered memory in IdeaPad 5, HDMI 2.0 Port vs 1.4 in IdeaPad and 10 Gbps type-C port, supporting DP 1.4 vs 5Gbps port in IdeaPad 5 with only DP 1.2. Now for lot of users, those may not be that important but for a lot, those are. 5700U is capable enough to use more than 16GB of memory, if you're running memory intensive workloads like VM, huge Code project compilation etc. Similarly, if you're using some docks to extend your workspace and want to use multiple high resolution display, DP 1.4 does offer better output as it can distribute the bandwidth to two DP 1.2 connections using MST protocol, enabling to connect two 4k display at 60 Hz.
Similarly, if you're using high speed external SSS storage for data transfer between the device and storage, the 10 Gbps port does offer lot faster data transfer than 5 Gbps ports.

What resolution can this support? Also if you are using it mainly connected to external monitors and the screen is rarely used is it a decent work performer for excel/web/outlook/etc? Currently using an it with 12mb and would like a little faster.

How does this compare to the Costco LG Gram $800 deal with the 11th gen I5, 16gb ram, and 512gb ssd? Not very tech savvy, I can see the battery life is much better in the LG, and the LG should be more durable. This one seems to have a better chip. I don't care much about brightness, 90% of the time laptop sits on a shelf with TV as a monitor when in use, although I do take it camping or in the car once in awhile.

Ordered the Gram last week, it still hasn't shipped so I could cancel or return and save a couple hundred bucks if they are relatively similar. I don't use at all for gaming, mostly streaming and web browsing, some staking crypto.

You likely won't notice a difference with the different chips.

Is battery life worth $200 to you? Sounds like weight is not a factor for you (which is the selling point of the Gram). Not sure about durability, but you are probably right about the LG being more durable.

Personally, I am tempted by this one due to it having touchscreen. I would prefer a longer battery life, though.

I wouldn't really use the touchscreen, and longer battery life would be helpful. Plus I haven't had good luck with HP products, although due to that its probably been 10 years since we had any, so pretty meaningless today.

Mostly want to make sure the new laptop will still be capable a few years down the road, my 4+ year old Acer has an I5, 8gb of ram and 256gb ssd, and has been great but is struggling a little bit now.

Screen on the Gram is also way better. It is nice and bright, I think around 400 nits. I had the 17" model for some time. It was a great machine.

No, but apparently if the 17" throttles to stay cool if you do extensive gaming. I only use it for web browsing and Office. Never had an issue.

Probably because the average person is fine with 250 nits, me included. I personally don't find it too dim.
