advantage of this HP over the lenovo
1. This HP has usb-c with DP and PD, meaning you can actually use a dock to both power the laptop as well as having 4K60hz output over the usb-c. The lenovo usb-c has neither DP or PD function
2. This HP has HDMI 2.0. The lenovo only have hdmi 1.4 meaning that lenovo has no way to output 4K60hz at all while with the HP you can actually connect two external 4K screens and run both at 60hz. If you are the type that want a laptop that can run multiple external screen, the HP beats the lenovo by a mile
3. This HP has dual ram slots meaning you will be able to upgrade all the way to 64GB ram and run them in dual channel. The lenovo has a built in 4GB soldered ram with 1 ram slot (hence it has a weird 12GB ram configuration with the costco model because that one ram slot has an 8GB module). So with the lenovo you are limited to 40GB ram and its not dual channel.

advantage of the lenovo:
1. Slightly bigger battery
2. Slightly brighter screen
3. Black color keyboard is better with white backlit and visibility compared to the HP silver keys not as well visible with the backlit.
Not sure if anybody has already answered this but this deal is better than the Lenovo IdeaPad 3 deal you're referring. IdeaPad 3 15 is equivalent to HP 15 and lowest tier in their main line of consumer laptops. It has 4GB soldered ram and only one upgradable ram slot, only HDMI 1.4 port and the Type-C port is a 5Gbps data port, not supporting display out and charging.
This Pavilion 15 has two ram slots, supporting 64GB of memory (32GB is the max HP sells this model with, not maximum supported), hdmi 2.0 port and fully featured Type-C port, supporting 10 Gbps data, display port 1.4 (4k at 120 Hz) and power delivery charging which can be used to charge the device with any 45W+ PD charger.
Why does HP keep releasing these decent laptops with a 250nits screen?

Nice specs but 250nits is a deal breaker for me.

much better laptop for less

This one has WiFi (AC) or 5 while HP has WiFi 6. Ram wasn't the deal breaker for me, WiFi was, I use my laptop exclusively on wifi and there are too many devises in my home these days so want something that can cut through the interference.

Am I analysing it all wrong?

Ideapad 5 is a much better than this, there's a version that was selling for $680 and had bigger battery, aluminum built and 300 nits IPS display. It may appear again if you can wait.

No thunderbolt. Too small a battery. No HDMI 2.1. Blah.
Yes, but you get what you pay for. You can't expect a porterhouse steak when you buy a hamburger. Any laptop with the specs you mentioned would undoubtedly cost more.

Is this a glossy screen or a matte? I have LG Gram. Love it but hate the glossy screen when working outdoors.
If you look in the recent LG Gram posts (either the 15 or 17 from Costco), someone mentions an old reliable company where you can buy matte screen covers and I think you can get them custom cut to your dimensions. I just ordered the 15 so will probably do this at some point.

I have 40 plus smart devices and a couple of tablets, laptops, desktop and smart tvs on my home network and have 0 issues. None are WiFi 6 ready and i am using a tp link m9 mesh with 3 units.

Will black Friday have better deals this year ? Really want to buy from Costco
Costco didn't have good Black Friday deals last year in laptops that range. I noticed that they had much better deals late February early March, and now again in August-September. Just an observation, thought.

Thanks hopefully that was due to supply issue like everyone else back then. Laptops are flooding in now so hopefully Costco has some in late November

Do these devices get an automatic upgrade to Windows 11 ? I saw some talk about MS not allowing an automatic upgrade for all current devices. You can download and install, but automatic updates will not happen

Just ordered mine!
Way better than the deal on HP, I only have to wait 3 days vs. 30.

Bought one, waiting on shipping. Curious on the comments on HP quality. I've only owned Dell & Lenovo laptops. Last Lenovo IdeaPad was a lemon so I was willing to try HP. Anyone weigh in on HP v. Lenovo?
