advantage of this HP over the lenovo
1. This HP has usb-c with DP and PD, meaning you can actually use a dock to both power the laptop as well as having 4K60hz output over the usb-c. The lenovo usb-c has neither DP or PD function
2. This HP has HDMI 2.0. The lenovo only have hdmi 1.4 meaning that lenovo has no way to output 4K60hz at all while with the HP you can actually connect two external 4K screens and run both at 60hz. If you are the type that want a laptop that can run multiple external screen, the HP beats the lenovo by a mile
3. This HP has dual ram slots meaning you will be able to upgrade all the way to 64GB ram and run them in dual channel. The lenovo has a built in 4GB soldered ram with 1 ram slot (hence it has a weird 12GB ram configuration with the costco model because that one ram slot has an 8GB module). So with the lenovo you are limited to 40GB ram and its not dual channel.

advantage of the lenovo:
1. Slightly bigger battery
2. Slightly brighter screen
3. Black color keyboard is better with white backlit and visibility compared to the HP silver keys not as well visible with the backlit.
Not sure if anybody has already answered this but this deal is better than the Lenovo IdeaPad 3 deal you're referring. IdeaPad 3 15 is equivalent to HP 15 and lowest tier in their main line of consumer laptops. It has 4GB soldered ram and only one upgradable ram slot, only HDMI 1.4 port and the Type-C port is a 5Gbps data port, not supporting display out and charging.
This Pavilion 15 has two ram slots, supporting 64GB of memory (32GB is the max HP sells this model with, not maximum supported), hdmi 2.0 port and fully featured Type-C port, supporting 10 Gbps data, display port 1.4 (4k at 120 Hz) and power delivery charging which can be used to charge the device with any 45W+ PD charger.
Why does HP keep releasing these decent laptops with a 250nits screen?

Nice specs but 250nits is a deal breaker for me.

$610 for a laptop with these specs with a chip shortage going on and folks found reason to complain because it doesn't have the feature they want that belongs on a much more expensive laptop.

this is obviously a laptop you mainly use indoors for the basics or as a workstation attached to a dock for work.

I'm not the type that's going to upgrade with additional RAM/Slots/Flux Capacitors or whatever. I just want a good, fast laptop for everyday use. Likely be on the go a fair amount and want to be budget friendly. Ordered the Lenovo IdeaPad 3 15.6" Touch Laptop: Ryzen 7 5700U, 512GB SSD a few days ago then this deal comes out. Anyone think I should return the Lenovo for this HP and pay $50 more? I don't know enough to understand if it's worth it. I'm leaning no. Any advice? Thanks.

keep the lenovo. the 4gb of memory will not be noticeable, but the quality on the lenovo will be noticeable now and in the future over the hp. And it doesn't have an annoying shiny screen.

Good price for the CPU and RAM.
However I didn't hear a lot of good feedback when it comes to recent HP laptops out of their cheaper series. The business models seem to be fine but the other ones aren't that durable from what I've heard.

Will take Lenovo over HP any day.
Hmm, I'm still using HP Pavilion dv6 laptop from 2011. Except for battery no longer hold charge, its working great. I have no idea about nits, something which people didn't care about before but now all of sudden its a deal breaker based on nits. Most people probably don't use their laptop for anything besides web browsing.

Having said that I'm shopping for a laptop for a high school/College student and this looks to be a good deal.

I still prefer the Lenovo solely because of the screen. There is a noticeable difference between 250 and 300 nits. This might be just personal experience, but every HP i brought, the quality is just trash. I feel Lenovo is much more solid.

No, but apparently if the 17" throttles to stay cool if you do extensive gaming. I only use it for web browsing and Office. Never had an issue.

Cool, thanks. I just ordered the 15". I called and got a $50 off $500 coupon that I never received via email like others did. So $760 total with $10 shipping for the LG Gram 15". Not bad.

For sustained video editing get a gaming laptop with a bigger chassis like the Asus Zephyrus G15, Strix G15, Lenovo Legion 5 Pro, Legion 7, Alienware x17, MSI GE76. The larger space allows for better cooling on sustained loads like video editing.

Thin and lights like this will blast out of the gate but in 3-5 minutes release so much heat that your Ryzen 9 or i9 turns into an i3.
Thanks!

Thanks! Gives me some piece of mind that I'm on the right track. I shop laptops like once every 5 years. Everything changes in a year or two.
