Bought this open box for $196 after 20% Amazon warehouse discount back in April. Bought acceptable condition and the outer casing was barely scratched.

My EVGA RTX 3080 runs about 5 degrees cooler without the outer casing on, so I usually run it like that. Performance hit through Thunderbolt is barely noticeable, but I'm not running crazy demanding AAA games.

When mining ETH, it loses around 5 MH/s compared to if running direct on a motherboard.

This is the barebone version not the Core X Chroma with extra usb ports.

As a unit itself. It supports charging. So if you have a macbook, this will charge your macbook with extra gpu processing and external display hooked up to just a single thunderbolt 3 cable.

As someone said, compatibility with mac osx and nvidia is not built in. only amd radeon graphics. so if you have that setup, it requires some tinkering

3 camels says lowest price ever and lowest price below $300 in past 6-months. If you're in the market, this is a good price.

a year ago I thought it'd be great for my MacBook, but compatibility with nvidia and macOS is a deal breaker.

Personally, though, the performance hits seem pretty massive at this point. Like even back in the day with GTX 1000 series you were losing like 20-30% performance over thunderbolt 3 with a GTX 1080. I guess if you wanted to have just one thin and light laptop be the core of your entire gaming/work/school world then it kind of makes sense as a high performance dock.
Yeah, TB is only 4 pcie lanes. There's a very small perf hit going to 8x, but there's no way that there's going to be no hit going to 4x.

I have a similar eGPU enclosure with RX580 to get 3 external monitors on a 2020 MacBook pro. Also, mac OS Big Sur does not support eGPU well, some applications do not pick eGPU even you set the application to use eGPU. I did not see this issue (The application does not run on eGPU) in the previous mac OS.

But I heard the news that Apple M1 does not support eGPU anymore. so you shall not get this if you plan to use it on an Apple M1 device.

Yeah it's a definite trade-off. You get lesser performance but a portable package.

My use case is what prompted me to go eGPU. I needed a light laptop/Ultrabook for everyday use but still wanted something for gaming. Rather than buy two (Ultrabook & gaming desktop) or a gaming laptop (portable, but definitely not light) I opted for this solution. It seems to fall somewhere in-between desktop and gaming laptop performance.

Probably. But only if you're using an Intel MacBook with Thunderbolt and put a supported AMD GPU inside the eGPU.

Copped one, thanks OP. This way I might not spend $1299 on a new Legion laptop to replace my Dell 1050to laptop lol.

Thanks OP, got one too. Now waiting for COSTCO to discount on the 17" LG Gram to get best of big and lightweight, business travel portable, and gaming at home. Just too damn frustrating to find a laptop that does all that.

I've been using a desktop with 5 monitors for a few years but am going to transition to a laptop. None of the laptops I've seen can support 5 external displays. If I bought this enclosure and a graphics card that supports 5 monitors, could I connect it to my laptop (via Thunderbolt 3) to get support for 5 external monitors? Thanks!

Yes, you should be able to take advantage of all the display-out ports on your graphics card. Depending on the resolution/refresh rate of your display(s), you may see a performance hit as compared to the desktop, due to TB3 bandwidth limitations.

not really help to mitigate the overheat as MacBook does not use the eGPU if you are on OS Big Sur

I'm not really versed in these but wouldn't it be wise to wait for a new model that supports Thunderbolt 4 which most newer higher end ultrabooks are coming with now?
