In 1997, you would have been hard pressed to find anything with 64MB of PC100, running WinNT4 on a P2 or AMD K6 and a partitioned 4GB hard drive and a SCSI CD burner.

Performance will be okay for general use, but if needed you can always install ChromeOS on it and then you'll have a better chromebook than you could buy for the price.

Product link on Gateway: https://gatewayusa.com/GWTN141-3.html

I like that it's an IPS screen, but otherwise the specs are a little concerning, even at this low price. I've seen similar specs around $200 to $230 lately, even during the chip shortage. And that's from much better companies than Gateway. I fully expect that the build quality on this will be absolutely abysmal.

I also don't see any indication whether the memory can be upgraded, if there's a free slot, or even if that's just single channel 4 GB soldered to the board. The laptop is marketed as "ultra slim," often hand-in-hand with "impossible to upgrade" or "everything's soldered down." And 4 GB just does not cut it in Windows 10.

Review was overall positive given the pricing. Basically there are clear shortcomings (which you have to expect at this price point) that can be overcome if you intend to use it hooked up with external monitor and mouse/keyboard; shortcomings are more glaring when moving it around. Performance was better than some i5 from prior gen at single core level, but dual core limits it from really rocking on video encoding if i recall correctly.

what I don't know is...what is the normal pricing for this? List price is nonsense

CORRECTION: This is not the same laptop in link apologies

If you remove the back of the PC, there is a slot available to add Ram, and also an open slot to add a second M2 SSD. The 128 GB SSD that it comes with is removable also, so you can replace it with a larger one. I bought 2 of these (I have twin sons) and you will definitely need to upgrade both the ram and storage. Mine came loaded with Windows 10 S, but to really be able to do anything at all you need to take it out of S mode, which is going to consume quite a bit of more storage and the performance on 4GB of ram is not going to be that great.

According to a reviewer, this has a ram slot as well as another available m.2. Sounds like same laptop as motile but intel version with fingerprint instead of ir cam

But is it worth upgrading when reviews show supporting systems, like touchpads, etc., failing early?

This newer version of Gateway still has longevity to prove before investing too much into them.

Would installing ChromeOS require overwriting the Windows install? Or is it possible to dual boot between the two OS installs?

Was about to say. GB was a fairly new concept in 1997, even for HDD.

4GB in 97 wasn't even around. Hell that would have been huge.
