Just purchased 2 8TB SMR drives for media. Not any slower transfering my collection over then my WD CMR Purple drives. I am sure there are a ton of drawbacks but none worth the increased cost for my needs.

I don't dl 4k movies... My NAS is full! But I'm OK with the resolution I get out of movies dl'd in the 1-2 gb range. I probably just made a bunch of the cinephiles cringe...

I have about 3000 movies (which isn't much compared to most people's collection) but I'm really almost full. Hence why I've got this alert set up. I think I set the pro to do the lifting, but I'm not sure who's doing what!

If you have Plex configured for maximum/original quality, it offloads the work to the client. A Shield will decode anything I've thrown at it so the server can twiddle its thumbs and only stream out the bits like a file server.

My server (single X5670) groans at trying to transcode 4K HDR content, but CPU usage is in the low single digit range when I play a 4K movie on my Shield.

I just double checked...DL'd the Green Night a few days ago, watched half last night, its a little over a 2 hour film, and I dl'd the "1080p webrip" that was an MP4 at 2.3gb. In some scenes where their was a clear "gradient" I would get some pretty bad color banding issues, but I'm not sure if its the DL, the i3, the network, the shield pro, or the tv.!

Also, the drive came back in stock and I grabbed one!

Seagate: never again. Every Seagate drive I've ever had has crashed hard and become unrecoverable. I think a half dozen over the last 10 years.
