  • About this deal:
    • This price is $150 lower (25% savings) than the list price.
    • Deals on 17.3" laptops have been less common than the more popular smaller sizes. This is a good budget choice for those who have light to moderate computing power needs and wish to have a larger than average display.

8 GB DDR4-3200 MHz RAM (1 x 8 GB). According to search, 32 GB x 2 max.
No details about its "5Gbps usb-c". Probably data only, no DP Alt mode.

Not sure why you would assume that. It may well have DP. Even my cheap Gateway has it.

Even HP website only states 1 SuperSpeed USB Type-C® 5Gbps signaling rate. Data only usb-c is common in entry level laptops. This is definitely an entry level laptop.

Think the Gateway said the same thing. Plugged in the adaptor and the display worked just fine. Signaling may well mean DP.

I am doing my shopping early this year since a lot of things are still scarce. Not sure if the chip shortages will still be a problem with laptops then, but I won't have to worry either way.

I had to spend way too much on a laptop similar to this just last year when my old one died.

On the other hand, I see a bunch of decent laptop deals have been posted for Labor Day sales so maybe the bottlenecks are easing and everything will be cheaper in the fall. CPUs really haven't been a problem, but screen controller chips have been scarce.

Maybe read it again? He says "Dell has"
That is a manufacturer, not a website.
I read it a few times...it says "on dell.com", as does the quote you posted from him.

What am I missing?

Huh, I don't see a .com but continue to interpret text as you wish.
You said BOTH posters were false claims. The latter one DOES say dell.com...so where is the 17" for < $1000 on dell.com, not bestbuy.com? I suppose if you use Dell financing and use the right code, you can knock fifty bucks off then it is under $1000.

But the point is, the first person said Dell had 17" for same price ($450), which is not true.

Demand will likely increase this winter, as people will be holed up at home during the cold and want stuff to do/upgrade PC or give as a gift. Intel will also be moving their desktop CPUs to the same major node 10nm/Intel 7 as their laptops with the introduction of Alder Lake 12th gen in october. All the other fabs producing chips have raised prices due to demand and being behind. Crypto is also going back up, and Windows 11 launching in october a lot of people will be looking to upgrade (happens every windows launch)

So yeah, this holiday season is going to be crazy for PC's/PC components/consoles, far worse than last year.
