I love this box, I got it last time it was on sale at this price. I'd been looking for a sub-$500 1080 17" laptop with a fast processor for a few years. It has a big enough drive that I partitioned it and made it dual boot LUKS encrypted Linux. F9 is the OS choice key, if anyone is interested. This thing literally boots either Windows or Linux in seconds and is very responsive. So far 8 GB of RAM has been fine, although I don't really use Windows, so that may not be enough for heavy Windows use. I like the screen, big and high resolution, often when I've had a 1080 laptop I find myself enlarging web pages, with a 17" screen I occasionally find myself shrinking them. Battery life is not its strong suit, but it seems like it can handle a few hours. The CPU is apparently almost as fast as the i7 desktop chip that I put in a Hackintush I built for some friends a 4-5 years ago.

Yes, there is a space for it and a motherboard connector. But no cable or drive caddy, so you need to get a cable and either figure out the caddy or use double sided foam tape.

See the posts by Hat Trick in the previous thread:

Discussion of cable - if you're using tape, figure out how the cable will run before taping the drive down (blue faces up when inserted in ZIF "HDD" connector on motherboard)

Photos with bottom cover removed - the first one shows the big empty space with room for a 2.5" drive, and the nearby HDD (SATA) connector

PDF of manual [hp.com] - see
- p 33 for info on removing the back cover (need to remove the strips of rubber/silicone feet, be sure the double sided adhesive tape comes off at the same time) and
- p 40 for a limited discussion of adding a SATA drive

No usbc charging, no backlite keyboard, no touchscreen. This should be added to note.

Thanks! I had seen that but the model number is different so I thought it was different though the specs do look very similar from what I can tell.

Small battery but this is bound to be a "desktop" replacement -- remember that category - and stay at home. Good deal.

Should also have "half" 48EU of Xe iGPU.

1 8GB RAM stick?

https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c07639484

Low gamut screen, but HP usually uses panels with low black levels so the picture is satisfying, if not color accurate for more extreme colors. Perfectly usable for typical use and don't need color accuracy.

They are both cn0173st. Good to post, though, former deal expired.

While it's true that few would choose this in 2021 to carry everyday or travel with, it's certainly light enough to take with sometimes, and the charger is smallish.

1 3200 stick installed, so easy to install a second and get dual channel. Socketed, not soldered, so the 8gb stick can also be replaced. Better setup than many laptops lately.

Yeah, I just mention the Laptop Replacement thing because people are so sensitive to it these days. I guess that's why we have all these paper-thin laptops now. Personally, I'm ok with thicker, robust laptops.

If the specs are correct and there is a 8GB stick then that is great.

The fact that this 11th gen i3 processor is quad core got me on board.

With a 17" screen, 1080p, quick but not fast performance, and a cheap price tag (for what you get) this would make a good desktop replacement laptop for kids who need it for schoolwork at home or older people. This is basically midrange chromebook pricing but far better specs and with a far more usable windows 10. I'll grab one for my mom.

If you take this CPU's highest frequency in practice and scale it vs the top i7's frequency, the Geekbench single core score scales decently enough to give you an idea of performance.

I bought the i5 for 529 last week for a client. They are elderly and loved it. Worth the drive to go get it.

how is the screen on this one? I know it only has 250 nits, but still bright and sharp? or trash?
