Stopped by my local (not really that local) Staples and picked one up.

Initial impression -- for an i3 CPU, it's pretty decent! 4 Core / 8 thread. 3.7Ghz Turbo.
The SSD is an NVMe Samsung according to device manager.
The WIFI card is an Intel AX201 Wifi6 adapter.

The screen is fine. I've seen worse and I've seen better, but for a $450 laptop, it's a decent screen. Colors and brightness are acceptable.

The keyboard is confirmed NOT backlit. As a matter of fact, the picture on Staples.com of this unit shows the F4 key with a symbol on it of a lit keycap. The actual laptop has the F4 key blank. So there must be a model with a backlit KB, but this one is not it.

If you have questions, let me know. I've got a spare 8GB DDR4-3200 SODIMM I want to stick it in so I'll be opening it up.

edit: I forgot, it comes with McAfee, Wild Tangent Games and Express VPN bloatware. Easily uninstalled. Other than that, pretty lean.

edit 2: Here are pics of the inside. 2.5" SATA missing cable, etc.

Have you read that Windows 11 is different enough that Windows 10 drivers won't work? Almost all Windows major OS versions were somewhat backwards compatible with the previous versions drivers (Windows 8 drivers worked in Windows 10 for example).

Unless MS goes out of their way to make sure only Windows 11 drivers work, then I don't see why Windows 10 drivers won't work in Windows 11. It's not *that* different.

But, as you say, we will have to wait and see...
No I doubt that the drivers would be a problem. I have done a fresh install of Windows 10 on a laptop and two desktops no problems without downloading specific drivers.

However if TPM 2.0 is not available on the machine it is not the least bit unlikely that Microsoft will not let you install windows 11.

The only point I was making is evidently Microsoft told Dell to not bother with the drivers because those Desktops will not run Windows 11. I am really just guessing. Time will tell but so far seems to me Microsoft is solid on TPM 2.0 requirement.

Is that really the power key next to the backspace key?
You can change the settings for what Windows does when the power key is pressed (as well as closing the lid, etc). I have mine set to sleep or hibernate.

I let the laptop discharge down to 90% and plugged in USB-C charger, but no...it does not recognize the charger. That would have been a nice little bonus. But, the charger that comes with it isn't large or heavy.
I tried too and it didn't work for me. I wish vendors would make this more apparent. How is this not a big deal? One adapter that can charge phone, tablet and laptop on the go. It's a PITA to organize all the various power adaptors in my drawers.

It's a 10 pin connector, and the cables I see are also 10 pins so it's a high probability they will work. It's just a matter of getting a long enough flat cable. Any extra can be folded away.

Going to order one from Amazon [amazon.com]. Should have by Thursday.
Got the SATA cable today. It works. Smilie

The exact one I bought is sort of out of stock now as it has a 2 week delivery (and increased in price), but there are lots of similar ones, just search 925456-001 [amazon.com]. There is one for $9 [amazon.com] w/FS with Prime.

There is also ebay [ebay.com].

The cable is just the right length.

Seems like a decent deal. I would just wait until windows 11 is out if you don't need a laptop now.

Save the hassle of upgrading and cleaning laptop of old files.

Did you order a particular drive for this - or did you have an extra/old drive that fit?

I had an extra 512GB SATA SSD that I installed. But, literally any normal SATA drive (SSD or HDD) will fit. Mind you, I did not use an "official" bracket or such. Since I put in an SSD, no moving parts, it doesn't need to be that secure. It's pretty snug in the area it's meant for -- it's not going anywhere. One could use a small piece of double-sided foam tape to keep it super-secure.

I find Windows updates and cleanups run fast on an SSD. And it's not hard to cleanup the files with Disk Cleanup.
It's not about the speed. It's about the apps, the files and drivers. There is no guarantee that what you had before will work on the new OS. Its a PITA finding drivers, locating licences, setting up software preferences and disc cleanup doesn't get everything.

I still have my XP, Vista, 7, 8 machines lying around. My upgrade cycle pretty much lines up with OS updates. When Win 11 becomes available in laptop and desktops. I will be buying devices then.

Unless you need a laptop now. Just wait for 11 to come mainstream.

Anyone manage to roll a Fresh Start onto this bad boy? Which driver is the Hangup? I'm on hour 4 of trying to get a bloatware-free version installed and it keeps crapping out with a "SAFE_OS"
failure on "BOOT" even using clean boot, what gives? UEFI Safe boot disabled, TPM on or off, same nonsense.

I uninstalled McAfee, Wild Tangent Games and Express VPN. Took maybe 3 minutes. I did not see anything else that I would consider "bloatware" preinstalled on this, and definitely nothing that would prompt me to install clean.

Are you attempting Windows 11 or 10?

You do realize this laptop states that it will support Windows 11 when released? That means drivers should not be an issue. As far as apps, if you have apps that aren't compatible, they're not going to work regardless if you buy now or wait.

You truly are making much more of updating that it really is.

Cool if you want to be a Windows 11 guinea pig. I'd much rather get a Windows 10 laptop now and wait 6-12 months to upgrade to Windows 11, once the bugs in the OS and the drivers are worked out. Windows 10 is supported until October 2025.

For me, I haven't really seen anything in Windows 11 that is a *must have*. There is a *don't want*, and that's the centered dock bar/Start menu (ala macOS). It's like a bad Helen Keller joke on everyone!
