8GB is enough for "99%" of users, unless you listen to a lot of audiobooks, and read books with a lot graphic contents, eg comic books. By the way you can always delete and redownload books in your library at any time.
True the Kindle books are expensive but you can actually rent a kindle books from library.

The code works until October 25, 2021 for prime students, and the price at Amazon is still $84.99, so this deal is still alive.

I also have the original kindle basic. In what ways do you like it better than paperwhite? Just curious because I am debating whether I should it get it. Thanks!
The screen protector of the Paperwhite. It makes it waterproof, but also adds an extra layer. I never read in the pool or in the bathtub. It's just not me, so it's an extra layer I don't need/want. (Anyone) remember the days where people would peel off the AG coating off of monitors? The Basic is also a few grams lighter. This is coming from a PC gamer with a slight obsession in mouse weight reduction. laugh out loud. And the Kindle logo. It's a bit of a distraction for me.

The only feature the Basic is really trailing in is the resolution. There is the slightest fuzz to the lettering if you really look closely. And no color-inverting.

Of the two, I still prefer the 2015 Paperwhite. The screen has a slight warmth to it. Now you have buy the Oasis for that feature. LMAO

Disclaimer: I don't have the new Paperwhite yet, but I did order it to gift it to someone. I'm basing my preference from the research I've done, aside from the resolution difference compared to my 2015 Paperwhite.

Anyways, l'd get both at this price Wink

Yup I've noticed the small "fuzz" in the lettering of the basic. I'm still not sure if I want the paperwhite. I really want the oasis, but I need a slick deal on that for me to purchase it haha!

How does this work? Like is it a tablet and you can download apps and stuff?
No it's a Kindle Paperwhite not a Kindle Fire (which is a tablet). It is primarily used for reading E-books. It doesn't play games and have apps like the Kindle Fire.

For those saying Kindle books are expensive, there are thousands of free Kindle books out there (some of my favorite books I got free). Also many big series go on sale for 99 cents a book periodically. There are tons of free e-books under Project Gutenberg as well. https://www.gutenberg.org/ You can use other formats on your Kindle including PDF which makes it super convenient. Calibre can convert anything for free if you need a different format. Our local library lets you rent books online and you can loan books to friends for free that you own so if you have friends like I do who spend a lot of money on books you can read their entire libraries when they are done with them.

That being said this is a great deal for a Paperwhite. My favorite E-book reader of all time. I have the non ad version. If the ads bother you Amazon live chat can remove them for $20.

Don't try the latest Oasis model because you're not going to want this afterwards.
for $250+ I'm sure I won't want an Oasis no matter what
Best way to read ebooks is with Amoled screen set black background and a an orange-yellow color text.
A couple people out of hundreds will say it hurts their eyes - for them they can strain to look at the eink

You obviously haven't been on SD long enough to know that you never pay retail if you're a true SDer! You can get the latest Oasis for as low as $80 with a trade in and sale/promo. There are other ways to get them cheaper but not directly through Amazon. Show me studies where Amoled screen is better for reading than e-ink technology? Amoled like LCD screen is still backlit. Meaning the light source is beaming directly into your eyes instead of front lit like e-ink where the LED light source is lighting up the screen from the front edges of the screen. The 10th gen Oasis have the warmth light feature which reduces the harmful blue light and made it even more comfortable reading at night time. There is also a night mode on the latest Oasis where the screen is inverted and turn into a dark background while the text becomes white color this saving battery life and make even more easier to read. So anyone who thinks reading ebooks on Amoled screen is better than on a Kindle Oasis must be delusional or never tried it on both technology. I have done it on both and I own the latest Oasis.

Please share how to get it for $80. I'm interested!

Do a search on here for Kindle Oasis and see the previous threads. It involves Prime Day promotion and sale and trading in your old Kindle. So if the stars are aligned, you can get them for cheap!

Eh this was the BS response from customer service - that the promo code was having problems so they took the $45 off the listed price.

Its an insanely stupid response given that the promo code was supposed to be for prime for students vs. just a discount for everyone. Additionally, the product routinely goes on sale to mid 80s or less, makes no sense to drop the price just because a promo code was having issues.

They just didn't like that people were signing up to stack the coupons, and they are really pissing off a lot of us by being obstinate about a $45 deduction.
Yup, so much BS, legitimate false advertising. A few people told me they would refund me $45 when I received it...

Quote from spicyc01 :
The supervisor I spoke with yesterday told me that they would give me a refund once I received my paperwhite today. I was skeptical but I called and the representative issued the refund! I honestly thought Amazon was going to figure out a way to not issue the refund…it took a few minutes to process but it was painless.
Received mine today, currently on the 4th CS person, I was promised $45 no they are saying it was in the price...

...yeah, I'm not renewing this prime student promo and staying away from amazon forever again..

I have a student account, and it's still working for me. Debating whether to wait for the 20% trade-in or just spend the the full $40 + tax. But it seems combing both coupons works for some and not for others. By the time I get my trade-in coupon, they'll probably entirely cancel this student promo. Amazon likes to play these tricks. This is after spending $55 + tax on a Kindle Basic for Prime day. Mad Even though in some ways, I like it better than the Paperwhite.

I had question regarding kindle or Fire HD 20% trade-in details, read amazon page but not really clear. Hope SDer can help to explain.

*** estimated value (might be adjusted) looks understandable. If my old kindle said $20, they will give me pre-paid label to ship back, check condition. If hold charge, cosmetic ok, then issue $20, or deduct or adjust $5 as it said, or rejected (send item back to me?)
----> GC part ok, I can wait or use it later for other purchase.

*** 20% off deal : Do I need to wait until amazon received trade-in item and complete procedure? then it will be appeared to my new kindle or fire HD purchase check out.
-----> the reason I asked is sometimes Amazon deal time (ex: kindle $129--> $79) only couple of days. if need to wait until they receive it, Price will be back to original.

*** will that trade-in 20% discount be combined w/ AMEX MR , chase, citi typ offer?

thx
