UPDATE - Received mine today 9-9-21, definitely IPS screen.
So, the $80 more than the current Staples HP i3 $450 deal gives you:
1) a backlit keyboard
2) about 8-10% faster processor
3) better integrated graphics
Iris Xe Graphics G7 80EU (i5)
vs
UHD Graphics Xe G4 (i3)
4) SD micro slot
5) ASUS has much easier case disassembly for changing hardware

- weighs 5+ lbs
- pretty much hollow inside
- decent processor and integrated graphics
- need to add ram to get the most out of it
- screen size may affect battery life
- can't find details about this in my short search. (Can this charge with usb c, thunderbolt, hdmi version, screen brightness and accuracy, etc…?)

It all depends what you are looking for in a budget 17.3" laptop. The backlit keyboard is very nice in the evening, but there can be some keyboard visibility washout if you have monitor brightness turned up all the way or even in the daytime. Some keys are in different locations compared to HP. The up/down keys and power button are all in different places, which is a PIA if you set the power button to power off because it is where page-down is on HP. Is the $450 i3 deal a better value? It depends what your needs are. As far as comparable speed in various tasks, IDK, never tried out that HP i3.

OP, rank the relative invisibility of the keyboard?
What do you think about the audio? I find on my Vivobook 15 Asus has done an excellent overall job. I have the Harman Kardon-branded version, while the one you posted is Asus Sonicmaster. Apparently, the Harman Kardon version is the successor to the Asus Sonicmaster.
I have no idea if it's all marketing BS naming, but the HK version sounds ok to me.
* Do all these damn vendors try to void / dishonor your whole warranty just because one self-adds a RAM module or SSD?
* Does anyone have any opinon about the build quality / durability / long term reliability of this vs.

The better graphics, better (reportedly) easy of access for upgrades (RAM & disc? Just disc?) on this sound good to me in comparison to the HP.
Given all the problems people seem to have with laptop quality / reliability / warranty support for defects / design problems, etc.
I'm not so comfortable with any laptop vendor, Asus, HP, Dell, Lenovo, etc.
I'd like a budget 17" laptop for long term (multi-year) productivity use with as good reliability / quality & features as possible, but I'm not sure what's going to be less risk / trouble between the budget options.
Graphics matters somewhat since I do CAD that uses shaders and GPGPU and may do it on this sometimes so the more the better
but not necessarily looking for a NVIDIA/AMD higher end add-on card unless there's a good deal on a more workstation or hiqh quality gaming laptop option.
I'll use LINUX mostly maybe dual boot windows; not sure whether there's an advantage to this one vs. the HP in terms of drivers / peripherals etc. for majorly important usability -- power management / speed control, sleep, pointer, networking.

Laptops using the same chassis and the same CPU family (Core 11th gen) will likely use the same mainboard, with different specs (i3/i5/i7, RAM/SSD/WiFi, optional discrete GPU). This previous generation with 10th gen Intel Core [notebookcheck.net] using the same chassis with the same ports but (obviously) different mainboard, also has 8GB on-board. There is a version, Vivobook 17 X712 [asus.com] with 10th gen Core i5 that has either 4GB or 8GB on-board but I haven't found an actual retail product with that spec.
