Decent price for a standalone.

But in 4x~ the price of a bt elm obd you just plug into the port and use your phone with inCarDoc and other apps to do the same plus more, like tracking live mpg for ecomodder.com hypermiling.

Anything cheap and popular on ebay.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/143525400330

Most of these and similar Chinese made clones work fine. If a particular model just doesn't taken to work, get a slightly different one and it'll likely be ok.

"ELM 327 Bluetooth" are the key words.

Nothing sophisticated - just a box that talks to the car and phone, allowing you to pull data from the car and reset error codes.

...

Works fine here.

With InCarDoc android app (tons of pc, mac, android, iphone apps - just start with the free ones), easily reset error codes, track mpg, etc.

Once you get "beyond" what these cheap obd tools can do, there's the higher end, handheld models at Harbor Freight ($100~-300+). Unless you're a mechanic or tuning cars, no need for these in general. (Cheap to borrow from an auto parts store if possible, too.)
