Currently have an older Samsung 2.1 soundbar with wireless sub. Will one of these be a decent upgrade or not much difference ?

It depends on which Samsung you have. This one gets really good reviews for its sound quality, but if you're already happy with the sound from your Samsung, it may come down to the features more - like Atmos, built-in Airplay and Chromecast, etc. Or the ability to add true surround sound with the (additional cost) wireless rear speakers.

If you don't need more volume or any of those features, no reason to spend your money.

Was able to snag one and also the rear speaker kit. Got everything for $425 with tax out the door. They were supposed to cancle the $50 gift card as I was able to get them to take another $50 off. My pricing was $315 for the soundbar and 79.99 for the new rear speakers. Was not supposed to get a $50 gift card but they emailed me it just a few minutes ago. I already paid and picked up my stuff yesterday after a 4.5hr round trip (nearest store with open box in stock). So thank you to the OP. Gonna hook it up finally after work today hopefully. Oh also forgot, I dont think its supposed to come with an HDMI cable but mine did, a nice rocket fish 8 foot 2.1 HDMI cable too.

Fake Atmos isn't a selling point for me, but YMMV. You will get more dialogue clarity with a center channel though.

So lucky! It was supposed to include an SPDIF cable (mine didn't), but no HDMI. And even luckier for the extra $50 discount! I'm guessing they got confused because there's also a bundle discount, but that should only have knocked the surrounds down to $130 from $180: https://www.bestbuy.com/site/comb...2f13b08891

Thanks OP!!!

I noticed after you posted the SP9YA was also on sale. After reading some reviews, decided to get the SP8YA. If I want to go 5.1.2 I can add the additional rear channels if I feel the need. I get by with an old LG 4.1 SH7B sound bar and was looking to upgrade for some time now. Used my $200 from my LG TV purchase a year back, and hoping that the TV Sound Share Mode works well with my C9.

Also decided wanted 60% off vs. 55% (give or take if my math is good which it historically sucks).

Thanks for the heads-up. Definitely grabbed one.

EDIT - for grammer

Glad to help! Yep, I added the 9Y to the OP as well because I was on the fence when I saw it was available. I had the same idea you did, I'd rather add rear speakers later since the 9Y's 5.1 is just virtual surround anyway.

I currently have a nice 5.1 system that gets its signal from the TVs optical output. The amp cannot handle a rear center channel. Is there another way to run the center rear? Perhaps wirelessly with a Firestick or Chromecast?

I believe all of Samsung's 2.1 channel soundbars use a subwoofer that only goes down to the 50Hz range at the target sound pressure level. So if you listen to music or watch movies with deep bass you will notice a significant difference because the SP8Y has a subwoofer that goes down to the 35Hz range at the target sound pressure level.

What killed me is the down mix to stereo in surround.

Can you add rear speakers to the 9Y for 7.1? I decided to go for the 9Y instead because they had Open-Box Excellent for it at $455 with $50 GC and I don't need to drive to pick it up.

The 8Y only had Fair/Satisfactory and I would have to drive 20miles and worried if it was missing anything important or damaged too much. So I decided that 9Y for $162 more was worth it and I don't need to drive.

Thanks OP for the post! I bought a q950a and now i'm gona return it because it doesn't seem it's worth it for over $1000 lol

I bought one a couple of weeks ago to pair with my LG C1 and ended up taking it back. It sounded great for music, but flat for TV and movie watching—this was even after spending a lot of time trying to tweak all the settings and running the room calibration in the app.

I replaced it with a Samsung HW-Q700A. Despite it having a smaller subwoofer, there was so much more bass/definition to it than the LG.

Edit: Also forgot to mention that I was having issues with CEC. Sometimes it wouldn't cut the soundbar on and other times, the soundbar would cut on, but the TV would randomly switch back to the the TV speakers. Extremely annoying that LG couldn't get this working right with their flagship TV. I just the Samsung a couple of days ago, but I haven't experienced any of that yet.

Did you just ask them for the extra $50 off? I'm shopping online and I'm able to get the soundbar and the rears for $485 after tax with the rears shipping to my house and I have to pickup the soundbar about an hour away.
