20x20x1 is the perfect size to strap to the back of a box fan for a DIY air filter. Extremely effective.
That point is definitely brought up in every filter thread, but I wouldn't use the word supposedly. The higher MERV filters ARE more restrictive, which is the point. They filter more/smaller particles out. If your system can handle it and you want the higher filtration then go for it, otherwise don't.
You get much worse heating efficiency with a restrictive filter, and it' doesn't clean the air NEARLY as well as a dedicated hepa unit in the room where you are.

You can get the best of both worlds by doing it separately. Lower utility bill + better filtration.

you'd likely be better off with something with 1500+ MPR

From my experience, if your primary concern is removing pet hair and large particles out of the air, prioritizing air flow is much more effective. The cheaper, lower-rated filters will allow for more air to be pulled through the filter and will do a decent job at keeping pet hair and dust at bay.

Not as crisp as I expected. Slight after taste.

Your HVAC repair guy must love you if you're using MERV12.

Decent price if need filters now. Otherwise wait for Home Depot to do half off on carton of filters (12-pack) and you're set at even better pricing.

Agree with various comments—better to just change out average/cheaper filters more often vs fancy marketing overkill ones that work your system more.

I need this size and would like to go with merv 8 but don't really need 6 of them. Anybody ever see a unit price this low for less?

It gets tiring to see the same comments about how higher merv filters are supposedly more restrictive.
