this is not their budget ssd though
WD should have made it different revision, but all other manufacturers have done the same thing with their NVME drives recently. Adata was the first one took out SLC cache while keeping the same P/N IIRC. Even Samsung did that with 970 Evo Plus: https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2...plus-ssds/

It's been a bad industry practice, which I foresee it to get better because now it became an industry wide issue. Like other component, I expect SSD manufacturers will have different model number, parts number, or revision.

Also, even with that being said, it's hardware change, not software/firmware driven limitation, so I wouldn't worry too much about SN850 today to perform worse later.
Judging by their official statement, they will probably do it again.

Yup. You have to remove side panel without the PS logo, and you'll be able to install it there. The Beta firmware allows you to install NVME drives, but I'm waiting until the official firmware rolls out.
