It's been a bad industry practice, which I foresee it to get better because now it became an industry wide issue. Like other component, I expect SSD manufacturers will have different model number, parts number, or revision.
Also, even with that being said, it's hardware change, not software/firmware driven limitation, so I wouldn't worry too much about SN850 today to perform worse later.

Is there an internal expansion slot on the PS5?
Yup. You have to remove side panel without the PS logo, and you'll be able to install it there. The Beta firmware allows you to install NVME drives, but I'm waiting until the official firmware rolls out.
So it works without bugs to install and play native PS5 games?
