If you're talking about slowing down over time, there's a trick to Roku devices for deleting the cache -- I've found this helps get rid of sluggishness. I'm running a Roku 4 (5+ years old now) and it still works great if I wipe the cache a few times a year.

1. Press the Home button five times.
2. Press the Up button once.
3. Press the Rewind button twice.
4. Press the Fast Forward button twice.
5. The device will restart in a few seconds.

I also add felt and rubber bumper pads to the bottom to give it more airflow/prevent overheating.

I added microSD cards to mine, just some really cheap 32 GB guys, because it lets apps cache data. Forget where I read it, but Netflix is a good test. When you launch Netflix with no microSD, it has to pull all of that initial screen from the internet. After inserting a microSD, that page loads instantly. Yes adding the card also allows more channel storage if you need it, but I think Roku did itself a disservice by not advertising it for the performance improvements -- because there is a noticeable speed improvement by added the microSD cards.

The "updated" Ultra removed the microSD card because they supposedly beefed up internal storage but it's nowhere near as large as you can find with microSD cards so I guess time will tell if app bloat becomes an issue.

When a Ruku channel loads for viewing, it is able to default the closed caption. Most popular channels do not do this but I have noticed it happens with some foreign language channels.

Don't think there is anything you can do but to avoid those channels.

Are you sure the HDMI cables are good though? How did you test them? thanks, just put one in from the previous comment but haven't used it much to see if I can notice anything. Would you say you notice the biggest different in switching apps?

You run up against the channel memory wall pretty quickly. I have one of the new Ultras without the SD slot (along with a bunch with the slot) and the Soundbar without the slot. I wish they all had the slot. It shouldn't be called "Ultra" without it. I don't have "thousands" of apps installed, but I have a not-at-all-unrealistic-for-cord-cutters 100+ apps installed, and I now notice it reloading apps when I launch them. It isn't a lot of time - probably at least partly due to my 1Gbit connection - but it's nevertheless quite an annoyance. It also causes the wife to ask if something is wrong.

Believe it does actually, but don't expect a Shield LOL. Think the problem with the Roku is that it is audio crippled (think you only can get vanilla DD & DTS out of it - most of my ripps I used HD audio and believe it just spits out and error like can't play file or something when you try to play them or it's just silence). When I checked it out a while back I didn't even mess with plex (just used the built in media player to play networked files) and from what I remember researching it was that it was a hardware limitation and not a software thing) with no atmos or any other HD audio. Now I believe it does atmos with streaming services (no Netflix for some reason last I checked), that's a lossy DD+ codec and not what you find on bluray/ultra HD discs.

It's pretty shocking how a pesky little cable could do so much damage. Just a few days ago I could not get sound to my receiver or cec to work to control my receiver from my TV. Turns out it was a bad hdmi cable. I've been racking my brain for months trying to figure out why my sub was underperforming. I was on the verge of replacing it but then I decided to try a different sub cable and that solved the problem.
