If you've been waiting for the Avios bonus to return for AMEX Membership Rewards like I have, it's finally here through Sept 30th. Here's the text in the email I received from Aer Lingus:

"It's time again to travel farther and experience more. And now you can do so for less with 40% Bonus Avios when you convert your American Express Membership Rewards into Avios through September 30, 2021.

So why not get ready to make memories to last a lifetime, discovering Ireland's jaw-dropping landscapes or the vast cuisines and cultures of Europe? The choices are endless!"

This conversion is a great way to use AMEX for travel -- Avios are valid on British Airways, Aer Lingus, and Iberia, plus you can apparently use the BA site to book U.S. domestic travel on other partner airlines. I think there are other options as well through One World Alliance. I used Avios to Aer Lingus for RT tickets to Dublin a couple years ago and saved over $1300. You can also transfer directly into Aer Lingus.

Check The Points Guy for some of the particulars for redeeming miles with Avios because there are some tricks to maximize your value and minimize cash. Flying into London is NOT recommended due to the egregious taxes that apply even when using points. You can fly into another city and then book an intra-European flight on Ryanair, for example, to avoid the fees (which is what we did -- 3 tickets from DUB to LHR were $120 total).

Avios points do expire after three years. However, the only thing you have to do to reset the timer is earn more points. I threw in 1,000 pts not that long ago when they sent me a notice about expiring points, to extend them until 2024. Happy travels!

I just checked my Membership Rewards account, and there are MANY travel deals right now with airlines. I'm showing Aero Mexico, Air Canada, Air France/KLM, Avianca, Hawaiian, Qantas, and Virgin with various bonuses on transfers right now.

Avios can be a pain to use when traveling abroad from US as oftentimes you need to go through London and have to pay hefty airport taxes which really negate any value. But I've made use of them domestically on American Airlines and Alaska Airlines flights. Worthwhile if you live in a hub city for either of their partner airlines.

Flying into London is a scam -- with full redemption on points, it was still going to cost about $650 for each ticket two years ago. By flying into Dublin, I saved $425 on each ticket with the total cost for three tickets being less than the tax on one into London. That's why transferring points into Aer Lingus or Iberia is nice -- you can easily use that as a gateway into Europe.

Also, you can save on fees by making the reservation over the phone directly with British Airways (or Avios, can't remember). That tip was from TPG -- saved me about $200 from what I recall.

With this bonus, I actually have enough AMEX points to reach the Avios balance I need for our trip (330k!). I'm trying to decide if I want to use AMEX exclusively and save my Chase points from the 100k credit card offer, or use a combination.

100% this.

I've been to Europe a number of times on Avois- only time it was via London directly on BA metal was the first year a long time ago I got my BA chase card and had a free companion fare to use.... AL into Ireland ever since.

Domestic short haul can still also be decent value (on AA using Avois) but availability is pretty hit and miss.

Confused about how to use Avios points to book Aer Lingus. Book online at BA site?

Avios is one of the worst programs. Very limited availability, plus fees for international travel via London as mentioned above.

Can be good for travel within Europe from London.

With Amex, you can transfer directly into Aer Lingus. If you already have Avios, you have to link your Avios to your AerClub account and then transfer from the Avios site. It's 1:1 for Avios into AerClub.

There is 40% bonus to transfer from Amex to Aer Lingus? On the low end, how many points for roundtrip to Dublin from US?

Yes, they use Avios as well, but you can transfer directly into AerClub without going through BA.

Cheapest redemption from U.S. to Ireland is 13,000 one way during non-peak from the eastern seaboard (except Florida), going up to 20k during peak.

Here's the chart: https://www.aerlingus.com/media/p...mounts.pdf

Sitting on close to 1m Avios. Agree on the LHR taxes being obscene. And their partner award availability is not easy to find either.

The play here is to transfer to Iberia Avios. Fly to Europe business class with very low fees through Madrid or Barcelona (wonderful cities). Never go through London or use BA. you can transfer BA avios to Iberia.
