Hmm. A cheap grill brush with tiny metal wires that can come out, stick to the grates and end up on food? If you insist on these types of brushes at the very least make sure you get a quality brush. You don't want those wires in your mouth. Just my two cents I've read that these brushes can be dangerous

The plastic base that the (rather sparse) metal fibers protrude from on Expert Grill brushes melts readily. Be vigilant in keeping it flat, watch out when using the rounded scrapers...very easy to melt plastic onto your grill with these.

Do people think the wire brush thing is a joke? I have a buddy get one lodged in his intestines and had to have it surgically removed. These things should be banned. I will never use one again. I like the wood scrapers that conform to your grill over time.

Use a wadded up piece of heavy duty aluminum foil and tongs. You can also use wadded up wet paper towels and tongs.

Having experienced a grill brush bristle jabbed into my gums, I count myself lucky it wasn't worse. Thankfully I was able to pull it out with some tweezers, but it could have been a lot worse if swallowed. I'm not going to play roulette to save a couple of bucks on a grill brush.

Last year I was making burgers and one of the bristles ended up on my patty. It was horrible 😞, when I bite the burger, it got stuck behind my tongue. It was a very painful experience, stay away from these. You're better off using just the onion by itself. Just my 2 cents, I thanked God it happened to me and not my children.

Luckily...I guess..I've used these wire brushes forever with no issues. I think the safest way to clean a grill with one of these is EVERY TIME you finish cooking and take your food off, turn up the heat (if propane) for a few minutes. Wet the wire brush and then scrub the grill. You will occasionally need to flip the grates over and clean that side as well. Don't let food remnants and grease cool and dry on the grates. You wouldn't do it to you dishes so why on the grill grates. A quick look at the grates should be enough to see if you see any metal or other debris in the grates.
The next time you go to use the grill, go over it with a cheap $5 plastic bristle brush BEFORE you light the grill just to knock off any dust/ash/etc. Once the grill is up to temp, spray (or wipe with a paper towel and tongs) a little oil on the grates so food doesn't stick.
It's my belief that any metal debris will stick to gobs of dried grease/etc build up on the grates. Don't let that happen.
If you see any wires coming off the wire brush, throw it away and get another one. Once a year, clean the grates with oven-off. Once rinsed and dry, spray immediately with oil.

There really isn't a good alternative. Plastic brushes can't be used on the grill unless it's cool. You have to clean it when it's hot. The metal "coil" type doesn't get down between the grates like the straight brushes and the coil type can come apart...leaving metal debris.
Just like many things in this world, this product can be used safely if you use it with care.

Not competely safe as I saw on Mystery Diagnoses. Just be careful to inspect the grill as bushel can get lodged in intestine if it gets that far. Frown

I've cleaned my grill successfully for years without these. There's ways of doing it. Really just depends on the circumstances and how dirty it is.

Great. Post the better options that get down deep between the grates. The coil type doesn't. And they can also "break", leaving metal behind. The plastic type can't be used on a hot grill, which is when the grill needs to be cleaned.

A grill stone cannot get into the tight corners where grill grates meet and where grease/food particles gather. And all that powder will stick to that oil in the corners, where it will transfer to your food.

That sucks. Works fine for me and my particular grill without issues.
There's not much wrong with using these wire brush kind if you're aware of the issue. Trouble is a lot of people have no idea, and BBQ is a very social thing, so they're putting their guests at risk with their own ignorance.
