Truth is, most thieves you're going to deal with for bikes don't have to spend time learning this skill because the brute force methods are so easy and effective when crap like this [youtu.be] is peddled to help "secure" a bike.
The lesson from this video is that you shouldn't buy a $200 lock for a $100 bike. At the same time, a decent foldable or U-lock is probably better than nothing or a zip tie if you're trying to give your bike a fighting chance of staying on the rack for short stints.
Good luck!

A cable lock won't take more than a good pair of diagonal cutters or perhaps a Harbor Freight bolt cutter. For basic "walk away" security cable locks are fine (especially if you live in an area where people have a tendency to leave unlocked bicycles unattended) but otherwise they're not a serious option for securing a bicycle.
The folding lock might get a thief to walk on past in a rack full of cable locked bikes, since those are so easy to overcome.
A lone bicycle strapped to a small tree in an area where bike theft is more common? Well you should either be shopping chains or, just as likely, be ready to buy a lot of bikes (good news, you probably also live in an area with a very hot secondary market in bikes!).
Good luck!
