Bad time for ordering iPhone Pro Max.
The Apple online shows to me after I verified my military status:
Delivery: Currently unavailable
Pickup: Apple Store Pickup is currently unavailable.
Is Apple trying to collect military information and then gives everyone a shock for not being able to use 10% discount?

I just called and talked to Apple. This pre-order needs to be done on this Friday. For using 10% military discount, the pre-order has to be done online.
I'm not sure if it is store-wide or not, but every Apple Retail Store I've been to will also give you a walk-in military discount with an ID. Although I'm not sure if Veterans and Retirees will have to do the online verification exclusively or not. I can tell you the in-store pickup option does work though.
To get the discount on the iPhones you usually have to buy it outright or through Apple's financing directly. In the past, the discount won't work on your Carrier's monthly payment plan.
It also works on AppleCare and sometimes (not always) beats the educational discounts when you consider taxes. I would recommend checking both out for other non-iPhone products to see what gets you the best deal.

Total comes to $322.90 in my state.
I have a feeling you will see this for $299.00 before the holidays on non taxing military sites.
Only few reasons to order from Apple like with items like new iPad Pro miniLED that was only really available through Apple due to limited supplies
Faster shipping usually through Apple
and lastly Apple makes it easy to trade in old device to get new device. Almost traded in my old iPad to Apple but theexchange had such a good deal on the newest iPad Air that you end up paying even less even without trading in old iPad!

Last time I bought Iphone on release day was when I bought 6. The lines were crazy.
How is it these days?
Same iMac I bought is 2100 without military portal. I paid 1900.
Pull up 2 browsers, one regular and one private mode and compare prices. It's 25%
