I miss the yearly Target/Amazon/Bestbuy latest iPad generation at $249.99 during Black Friday. They never did it last year. They did it every year going back as far as I can remember. All good things come to an end I suppose. Darn.

No, unless you need the 64GB storage. The Air 2 has laminated better colors sRGB screen, vs. this one has the non-laminated lesser gamut RGB screen. This 2021 model is more like Air1 just with better CPU.
Considering this is a "tablet" i.e. your interaction is almost 100% screen usage, the laminated screen makes huge difference.
Also, the 9.7" older generations are too large and heavy for prolonged handling, the new ones are even larger. This tablet should be used with a keyboard, and eventually the pen.

I have Air 1 and Air2. I most likely will trade in the 1 to a Mini - my hands already start hurt from holding a tablet too for long, I don't want to develop tendonitis or carpal tunnel Smilie
In general, the tablet market today is a joke
Are you talking about the Air 2 that was released in 2014 and discontinued in 2017? I'd take this 9th gen any day over that old one. In fact I'm trading mine (Air 2 cellular) in as it's showing it's age and has for a while. Mostly because of the battery which lasts like 3 or so hours now. But it's also a smidge glitchy. I cannot fathom it being better than this 9th gen in any way. Even the screen.

Glad to hear this. I also have an Air 2 I'm upgrading from—it's showing its age. I had tried to upgrade to a Mini 5 earlier this year and just couldn't get used to the screen size. Having to zoom in on every webpage just to be able to read it was not working, and I eventually returned it. But the speed of loading webpages on it compared to the Air 2 was night and day, so I've been itching to upgrade since. Preordered this deal, but am wondering if I'll miss the laminated screen. I would like to physically see the Mini 6 to see if the somewhat larger screen will work for me.

Yes we're in same boat. I thought the last iPad base version was much snappier just playing around with it at Costco. (Before this 9th gen was announced by Apple.) I did not notice the screen being inferior or worse in any way than my Air 2. I guess I'll see when I have both next to each other.

This 9th gen iPad will definitely be fine for my use. I'll also be upgrading my 5 year old iPad 12.9 here soon as well. Either with an Xiaoxin Pad Pro (Lenovo) 11.5 inch ($469) or maybe even a Surface Pro 8 over Black Friday. Would like one tablet to be non Apple for the first time in years. Also considering Lenovo P12 Pro coming out next month. Finally some nice larger tablets to choose from!

This. When I learn friends or colleagues have a current iPad Air, I ask them what about its specs/features brought them to pay *twice* the price of the mainstream iPad? I have yet to get a solid answer.

I suppose an artist who demanded improved color or the improved sensitivity of the 2nd gen Pencil compatibility of the Air over the 1st gen Pencil compatibility of the regular iPad... but why not go full Pro model?

But the screen brightness is the same, the size is marginally different. The battery life is identical. The CPU is 1-2 steps back depending on whether it is the iPad 9 or 8.

There are other less important (for a tablet) differences, but they are relatively minor.

With the iPad 9, Apple really neutered the twice the price iPad Air for video conferencing. The iPad 9 now has a 12MP Ultrawide *front* camera and Center Stage, vs the 8MP non-Center Stage camera in the Air. This makes the already solid video conferencing regular iPad into a really impressive device. For half the price.

One wonders whether the purpose of the Air in Apple's lineup is simply to bridge the huge price step to the PRO models. (I believe the 3rd gen Air actually came from the prior iPad Pro.) And then customers not really looking critically at the specs, go to the Air because they don't want the "entry level" model and are not willing to spend the money on the Pro models. Apple must love these customers since the margin on an Air vs the regular iPad surely is delicious.

Anyone been able to pre-order from Costco.com with the warranty added?
The combination won't process because it's complaining about the shipping information for the warranty...

Will Walmart charge your card today, or when they ship it? I have a $100 off any purchase on Cash App that I've been saving for this. It expires in 7 days.
I ordered the iPad Mini from Apple but they haven't charged me yet. Not sure if Walmart is any different for preorders.

I just called target and they will price match this product at $299.00. With RedCard discount, this will put the price at $284.05 before tax. That is a Slick Deal for pre-release latest version. Old model is still listed and many retailers at $319.

FYI-Target rep couldn't make adjustment in cart since the item was preorder so she game me a reference number and quoted the exact discount ($30.99) that would be applied. I need to call back when the item goes live and they will adjust the purchase. Small inconvenience for $30.

You must be logged in on a school/education account. That is the standard "education discount" price for the iPad.
