Considering this is a "tablet" i.e. your interaction is almost 100% screen usage, the laminated screen makes huge difference.
Also, the 9.7" older generations are too large and heavy for prolonged handling, the new ones are even larger. This tablet should be used with a keyboard, and eventually the pen.
I have Air 1 and Air2. I most likely will trade in the 1 to a Mini - my hands already start hurt from holding a tablet too for long, I don't want to develop tendonitis or carpal tunnel
In general, the tablet market today is a joke

This 9th gen iPad will definitely be fine for my use. I'll also be upgrading my 5 year old iPad 12.9 here soon as well. Either with an Xiaoxin Pad Pro (Lenovo) 11.5 inch ($469) or maybe even a Surface Pro 8 over Black Friday. Would like one tablet to be non Apple for the first time in years. Also considering Lenovo P12 Pro coming out next month. Finally some nice larger tablets to choose from!

I suppose an artist who demanded improved color or the improved sensitivity of the 2nd gen Pencil compatibility of the Air over the 1st gen Pencil compatibility of the regular iPad... but why not go full Pro model?
But the screen brightness is the same, the size is marginally different. The battery life is identical. The CPU is 1-2 steps back depending on whether it is the iPad 9 or 8.
There are other less important (for a tablet) differences, but they are relatively minor.
With the iPad 9, Apple really neutered the twice the price iPad Air for video conferencing. The iPad 9 now has a 12MP Ultrawide *front* camera and Center Stage, vs the 8MP non-Center Stage camera in the Air. This makes the already solid video conferencing regular iPad into a really impressive device. For half the price.
One wonders whether the purpose of the Air in Apple's lineup is simply to bridge the huge price step to the PRO models. (I believe the 3rd gen Air actually came from the prior iPad Pro.) And then customers not really looking critically at the specs, go to the Air because they don't want the "entry level" model and are not willing to spend the money on the Pro models. Apple must love these customers since the margin on an Air vs the regular iPad surely is delicious.
The combination won't process because it's complaining about the shipping information for the warranty...
Edit: somebody already did. Just wanted to mention again
FYI-Target rep couldn't make adjustment in cart since the item was preorder so she game me a reference number and quoted the exact discount ($30.99) that would be applied. I need to call back when the item goes live and they will adjust the purchase. Small inconvenience for $30.
