For some, paying less now and in total, plus not worrying about the credits, is worth it.
Random T-Mobile numbers are getting this error message after entering phone number and SSN. "We're sorry, there was an issue processing your request. Please try again later." This is also happening on Apple's websites to those same numbers having the issues. T-Mobile is trying to fix the issue, but does not have an ETA.
So did some math and realized it's not really any great deal. (Good deal so far but you find better deals later if you are no in a hurry).
Here is the comparison: Let's say you have 12 Pro Max and wan to go to 13 Pro Max

13 Pro Max unlocked: $1099
Net w/o any taxes: $309

Im upgrading / trading my iphone 11 pro max .
Pre-ordered yesterday 09/23/2021 around 10 AM.
got a text an email this morning saying its ready to pick up.( was kinda surprised about this , but ig because this best buy has less people preordered , or got more stock , im in missouri)
I backed up my old phone to my computer . and reset the phone.
Got to best buy( I was one of the first 3 people there so i got help right away) , the guy asked me for my order number and name, then told me to get with a lady.
the entire pick up was about 15 mins, she asked for my id , then my old phone, she spent most of the time input stuff into the system. I confirmed on the machine my info is correct. she handed me the new iphone new in box with a sim card on top. I asked if she need to activate the phone or anything and she said no , when i put in the phone it should activate it self. got the phone and the receipt , now im heading home.
She didnt open the new phone box at all , she didnt ask if I need to transfer my old phone data to the new phone ( might be she noticed my old phone got reset)
Only do it if you have a iPhone 8 or below.
Not worth $700/800 after all the hassle that you have to go through.

I got $390 for Xs Max 256😔
However for my spouse trading iPhone 11 to iPhone 13 tmobile beats it hands down, BBY $250+tax but T-Mobile it's paying tax only although $215 out of $400 is one time credit.
Do I take the SIM out, sign up for Tmobile for 40 days, unlock the new iPhone 13, and then swap in my existing SIM?
Comes out to $280 + tax to upgrade from an iPhone 12 > iPhone 13 Pro. Seems like a decent deal to me.

I actually think the best play for iPhone 12 users is to upgrade to the iPhone 13 (non-pro). $620 trade in value... comes out to $80 + tax to upgrade.
While I'm tempted by the Pro features, I don't think I need them. This is a great way to upgrade to the latest iPhone with minimal cost.
