  • How Trade-In Works:
    1. Calculate your trade-in phone's value
    2. Buy your new phone online
    3. Complete your new phone purchase online and activate your phone on the carrier's network (Best Buy will help with all that.)
    4. Pick up your new phone in one of our stores
    5. Bring your trade-in phone with you when you pick up your new one. Best Buy will check to make sure you're trading in the same phone you told them about online and check for any damage that might make your trade-in ineligible for the promotion.
    6. Best Buy will take your trade-in's value off the cost of your new phone.
      • Trade-in value is calculated to represent a working phone that turns on and does not have a cracked or broken screen. Your phone will be evaluated when you trade it in to validate that it meets all requirements.
      • Your order must be picked up from a store to complete your trade-in and apply its value to your new phone purchase.

Actually it's very simple, Best Buy will not take a phone from you as a trade, if the phone is not fully paid and you are owed money on it.
To be honest, this is not true because I've personally (as a customer) run through a device a few years back that was still tied to a Sprint lease in the process of but not yet being cancelled believe it or not. At the time of trade it was still on the Sprint account and the IMEI took. Sprint owned that phone, and in the event they stopped getting their lease charge there would've been a "non return fee." Thank god those leases are now a thing of the past it seems but that's beside the point.

As my original comment says, it varies by carrier and individual situation. The only way to know is run the IMEI through the tool. And the only way to do that is in store with an associate. Of course you still owe the money to the carrier for that phone on your bill in any possible case even if the phone is gone, but that goes without saying.

Why would someone not pay off phone prior to trading unless they are trying to pull some shenanigans

svsfan was saying prior to trading. Bill credits great if you are keeping the phone.

For what it is worth i just got confirmation of my order (an upgrade):
Bought: Iphone 13 Pro 5G 256 GB
Traded: iphone 12 128Gb

This is the only pricing on the invoice:

Cost $379+$25 tax
Phone is $1099 so effectively $720 credit for phone.

Listed Discounts are $100 Trade-in promotion, $520 trade in allowance. The $100 discount on phone is embedded in the net price. (so there are 2 $100 promos, discount on phone and Trade-in promotion).

One other point vs trading in at t-mobile, with $800 credit, is that bestbuy is $80 more but the tax at Bestbuy was only on the net amount of phone vs the Gross cost of phone at T-mobile so after tax bestbuy is only $30 more expensive but all the credit is immediate not EIP lifetime credit.

No… :/ the idea is, keep paying your old installment while getting the full value of your original credit, you lose the monthly credit if you pay off the phone. Then they are also buying a new phone outright and getting a boosted trade in credit for that same phone that remains on the bill credit.

If people are legitimately trying to trade a phone in on an IB, that is why they would do it, and there would be a very good reason there too.

Well, OK then if you say so.

How does this deal work if I want to keep my current service plan with Airwireless ($40/month MVNO)?

Do I take the SIM out, sign up for Tmobile for 40 days, unlock the new iPhone 13, and then swap in my existing SIM?

Was thinking of trading 256gb 11 pro max for 256gb 13 pro max. Looks like net cost $489+tax after trade? Any cash back sites to knock few more $ off? Think that's the best I can do? Works on upgrade on One Plus right?

T-Mobile MAY waive the $35 upgrade/activation support fee but YMMV. I called in to pre-order my phone on 9/17/21 and they waived the $35 fee for me. It may be different if you're ordering in-store but the T-Mobile rep at BestBuy may be able to do it themselves or call in on the dealer support line to get it waived. My T-Mobile Care Expert didn't need supervisor approval to waive it.

Where do you see bill credits? I'm with T-Mobile and I just pay the difference for an upgrade, $100 + California tax.
