  • How Trade-In Works:
    1. Calculate your trade-in phone's value
    2. Buy your new phone online
    3. Complete your new phone purchase online and activate your phone on the carrier's network (Best Buy will help with all that.)
    4. Pick up your new phone in one of our stores
    5. Bring your trade-in phone with you when you pick up your new one. Best Buy will check to make sure you're trading in the same phone you told them about online and check for any damage that might make your trade-in ineligible for the promotion.
    6. Best Buy will take your trade-in's value off the cost of your new phone.
      • Trade-in value is calculated to represent a working phone that turns on and does not have a cracked or broken screen. Your phone will be evaluated when you trade it in to validate that it meets all requirements.
      • Your order must be picked up from a store to complete your trade-in and apply its value to your new phone purchase.

Being able to use second sim with another carrier (personal and work). Also if you need to travel internationally and need to use a local sim (much faster internet than tmobile). Or if in the future you want to move away from tmobile, less of a worry down the line.

I need it for the second sim for work.
Got it. So typically you need to wait 40 days on the T-Mobile network before they will unlock it?

I can see the advantages. I remember being in Asia And T-mobile had the benefit of allowing texting no problem, but the data speed was terribly slow

Quick and easy pick up and trade in at NYC BB location

Ordered on or about 9/21
received email "phone is ready to pick up" last night 9/27, picked up on 28th AM.

The process was rather simple and they seem to know what they're doing. 2 step process - Online order pick up to get the phone then was walked over to the Mobile area to process trade in.

Online order area - took the phone out of the locked closet, checked ID, scanned a few barcodes and then I was walked over to the mobile area to process trade in.

Trade in area - Gave them a wiped phone with the imei data on the screen, staff typed in some data and did a spot check on the phone for damage. Asked for my ID, took a picture of the phone. Gave me receipt for trade in, did not include $100 promo value. Staff was going to help me activate the sim but i said "I can do it myself", she gave me the phone sealed and I was on my way.

Only had to wait as someone was ahead of me during the trade in process. Otherwise it would have taken maybe 15 minutes.

Picking up my phone tomorrow. What do you mean by " Gave them a wiped phone with the imei data on the screen"?

The imei data is just found on the general settings > about tab right? So, just factory reset the phone and have that page ready for them?

My phone is out for delivery today(UPS 2nd day air, direct from tmobile) I can try to see if they will credit the account for the 100 bucks no harm in asking..if I had ordered it from best buy do they include the esim for it? I had read that many people had issues with putting in their old sim card into the new iphone something related to 5G so if it already comes included with the esim maybe less problems?
All iPhone 13s have esim. You would just have to contact T-mobile to activate it.

After you reset the phone there should be an i somewhere on the screen. Tap that and it will show the imei among other info about the phone.

That's an old phone but similar to that.

Oh! Good to know. I will try that and also activation on T-Mobile website after getting the call from T-Mobile today. It's odd to think that the phone itself can't be unlocked because the New SIM card is not set up properly though.
I don't know if the device shows up only after activation, but after going through the activation on best buy's website, the new phone was updated on my T-mobile account. That's when I was able to contact T-force and request unlocking my phone.

I was trading in a spare phone so it was already factory reset, so no generals > accounts etc.. instead there is a small "i" on the bottom right once the iPhone "wakes up" that will provide the Imei info.

Of course if you have not factory reset the phone, you can go through General >account and scrolling to IMEI to pull up that info.

The phone was showing up on tmo account before activating for me. It's the correct phone with correct IMEI. But after requesting with an agent unlocking errors out and it shows status unknown. Now that I've activated it again I'll wait for a few hours or days and request again if it doesn't automatically unlock

yeah I didnt know now I Feel silly for not ordering it through best buy..I wish I had known that all I had to do was put in MY cell number plus his last four of his SSN which I Could have gotten easily from him and I could have bought the phone myself for 799..will try contacting tmobile about it I mean 100 bucks is a 100 bucks why lose it for no reason..not sure why best buy is offering this but its worth a try to try to get credited back to the tmobile account

Placed an existing SIM into my new phone and it recognizes it as an Iphone and the color but when i clicked on the "Device unlock status" it says unknown. I only did this maybe 45 minutes ago so may take time to register? Also sent a note to tforce to unlock as i need it for work purposes under a different carrier. Rep shared that it may take up to 3 days. Others have shared they successfully unlocked the phone, so i'll wait for it to process.

Make sure you go to your order page and click set up phone so that your old sim is offline and new sim is online. I just did that right now. Waiting for….something….to happen

How are people doing a back up before the trade in?
From what I read you can't transfer contents at the store from old phone to new.

iCloud backup, backup on a computer
some employees will let you back up in store.
But I doubt you want to be at the store backing up over 50gbs
