  • How Trade-In Works:
    1. Calculate your trade-in phone's value
    2. Buy your new phone online
    3. Complete your new phone purchase online and activate your phone on the carrier's network (Best Buy will help with all that.)
    4. Pick up your new phone in one of our stores
    5. Bring your trade-in phone with you when you pick up your new one. Best Buy will check to make sure you're trading in the same phone you told them about online and check for any damage that might make your trade-in ineligible for the promotion.
    6. Best Buy will take your trade-in's value off the cost of your new phone.
      • Trade-in value is calculated to represent a working phone that turns on and does not have a cracked or broken screen. Your phone will be evaluated when you trade it in to validate that it meets all requirements.
      • Your order must be picked up from a store to complete your trade-in and apply its value to your new phone purchase.

just picked up my iphone 13 pro max blue 128gb and here is the entire process:
Im upgrading / trading my iphone 11 pro max .
Pre-ordered yesterday 09/23/2021 around 10 AM.
got a text an email this morning saying its ready to pick up.( was kinda surprised about this , but ig because this best buy has less people preordered , or got more stock , im in missouri)
I backed up my old phone to my computer . and reset the phone.
Got to best buy( I was one of the first 3 people there so i got help right away) , the guy asked me for my order number and name, then told me to get with a lady.
the entire pick up was about 15 mins, she asked for my id , then my old phone, she spent most of the time input stuff into the system. I confirmed on the machine my info is correct. she handed me the new iphone new in box with a sim card on top. I asked if she need to activate the phone or anything and she said no , when i put in the phone it should activate it self. got the phone and the receipt , now im heading home.
She didnt open the new phone box at all , she didnt ask if I need to transfer my old phone data to the new phone ( might be she noticed my old phone got reset)

what's the point of choosing a carrier if you pay almost full price lol

iPhone 13/pro is the weakest upgrade.
Only do it if you have a iPhone 8 or below.
Not worth $700/800 after all the hassle that you have to go through.
Your XR should be good through iPhone 14

I was looking in the bestbuy for the best iphone 13 phone deals through T-mobile and I noticed that if you trade-in SE2 you will get $280 off which you can buy from total wireless for around $130 after tax. The $100 off for activating+ $150 profit through se2 would take $250 off the final price.

How are people doing a back up before the trade in?
From what I read you can't transfer contents at the store from old phone to new.
From my experiences phone to phone direct transfer get the best result. So I transferred it to a third old iphone at home before going to store, and after getting the new phone transferred to the old iphone to 13

Starting with iOS 15 you can backup everything to iCloud for 3 weeks. I verified pics etc via browser were updated before wiping the old device - worked great.

For three weeks? You mean you don't need to pay to upgrade your storage for iCloud backup?

Make sure you go to your order page and click set up phone so that your old sim is offline and new sim is online. I just did that right now. Waiting for….something….to happen
I used an existing sim on the new phone and it is accepting calls and sending messages, I assume things are all set? I'll give it the 3 days. If it is still not unlocked I'll look at bestbuy.

edit: I'll reach out to tmobile again not bestbuy since they are pretty much done with me and don't expect them to have a role in the unlock.

Update: Phone is now unlocked. My account online is still showing the "Status Unknown" but the phone Carrier Lock is showing "No SIM restrictions". Put in a sim card from another country, did not get any restrictions message i got before and it tried connecting to the carrier (other country carrier name showed up). All seems good.

Not sure if it helped. After about 80 hours, it was still locked. I went through my Best Buy order and did the "Activate Phone" thing and entered my IMEI number on the phone. Then changed the sim card to the new sim card Best Buy scanned. Checked two hours later, phone is showing "No SIM restrictions" but online is still showing "Status Unknown".

Edit: another hour later and now the online page is showing device unlocked <-- Ignore, i was looking at the wrong line.
I wasn't able to activate the device using the main IMEI #; Best Buy doesn't recognize it at all. The CSR at Best Buy struggled with my activation. I was waiting around for almost an hour, so I suspected he mucked things up. After reading your post, I was able to activate my service using my eSIM IMEI! Hopefully my phone will be unlocked shortly, as T-Mobile has already authorized it.

Finally solved the Best Buy + T-Mobile trade in fiasco...

The phone was at the online order pickup desk, which they kept routing me to for 4 days straight. The computers at that desk couldn't do the T-Mobile trade in correctly. As a last ditch effort, they sent me to the mobile department. I have no idea why they didn't just do that in the first place. It took the lady at the mobile desk 2 minutes to confirm that she was able to do it. Apparently, I was the first one they were able to get this working with. There were about 30 other sticky notes for other failed T-Mobile pick ups like mine.

It looks no one was successful on high value SE trade-in. I have a 13Pro ready to pick up at store and found someone selling SE for $120. Should I just cancel the order?

iCloud backup, backup on a computer
some employees will let you back up in store.
But I doubt you want to be at the store backing up over 50gbs

That's been dead. The value now correctly shows as $280.
