  • How Trade-In Works:
    1. Calculate your trade-in phone's value
    2. Buy your new phone online
    3. Complete your new phone purchase online and activate your phone on the carrier's network (Best Buy will help with all that.)
    4. Pick up your new phone in one of our stores
    5. Bring your trade-in phone with you when you pick up your new one. Best Buy will check to make sure you're trading in the same phone you told them about online and check for any damage that might make your trade-in ineligible for the promotion.
    6. Best Buy will take your trade-in's value off the cost of your new phone.
      • Trade-in value is calculated to represent a working phone that turns on and does not have a cracked or broken screen. Your phone will be evaluated when you trade it in to validate that it meets all requirements.
      • Your order must be picked up from a store to complete your trade-in and apply its value to your new phone purchase.

just picked up my iphone 13 pro max blue 128gb and here is the entire process:
Im upgrading / trading my iphone 11 pro max .
Pre-ordered yesterday 09/23/2021 around 10 AM.
got a text an email this morning saying its ready to pick up.( was kinda surprised about this , but ig because this best buy has less people preordered , or got more stock , im in missouri)
I backed up my old phone to my computer . and reset the phone.
Got to best buy( I was one of the first 3 people there so i got help right away) , the guy asked me for my order number and name, then told me to get with a lady.
the entire pick up was about 15 mins, she asked for my id , then my old phone, she spent most of the time input stuff into the system. I confirmed on the machine my info is correct. she handed me the new iphone new in box with a sim card on top. I asked if she need to activate the phone or anything and she said no , when i put in the phone it should activate it self. got the phone and the receipt , now im heading home.
She didnt open the new phone box at all , she didnt ask if I need to transfer my old phone data to the new phone ( might be she noticed my old phone got reset)

iPhone 13/pro is the weakest upgrade.
Only do it if you have a iPhone 8 or below.
Not worth $700/800 after all the hassle that you have to go through.
Your XR should be good through iPhone 14

It's not tied to your account and it's lock to the first carrier sim. Just don't resell it as an "unlocked" phone.
Wouldn't there be a problem getting this phone unlocked down the road?
If this phone was bought say against a T-mobile number and you never activated it. You sell it to someone who puts in an AT&T sim how will they get it unlocked after 24 or 30 months? Wouldn't AT&T say you never bought it from us or upgraded ur line against us?

Just picked up one of my orders (both ID and fingerprint required).
Before I went to Best Buy, I did iCloud and iTunes backup, thinking everything should be safely backed up.
Little did I know that the Signal app does not use iOS' backup service and if you do not have the old phone with you, you won't be able to move your messages to the new phone. It simply doesn't support that.
So if you use Signal and want to keep your old messages, you need to either transfer your messages to another iPhone first before you go to Best Buy or you need to ask the Best Buy rep to allow you to set up the new phone before resetting/surrendering the old one.

For those who mentioned about fingerprint, I am curious.. Why do they require the fingerprint at Best Buy for this transaction? Is govt issued ID not sufficient as an identification?

Did anyone else have any issues trying to trade in an iphone 6? The trade-in value was initially $150 but now it's $0.
I did iphone 6+, got $140

Yes. That's exactly what will happen. It CAN be unlocked but it's brutal trying to find someone who knows what you're talking about and how to do it since the IMEI isn't theirs.

Someone else in this thread or the other one used a TracFone SIM first in their new iPhone and that means it's now locked to TracFone. It's hard enough unlocking a TracFone phone.. let alone one that isn't in their system!

Bestbuy needs your personal information including fingerprints. Bestbuy is waiting for the lawsuits.

Location is Atlantic in Brooklyn. I'm not sure if it's an incorrect value but the rep said she couldn't process T-Mobile trade-ins because she couldn't pull anything up with T-Mobile. Said something about they used to work with Sprint and, because of the merger, the system is all glitchy.

I was trading in an XS for $220 + $100 promotion + $100 off the base price.
same thing just happened today at Atlantic BK, just told me to go home and I will get a call once they're done.

it may be a California law that requires fingerprints when trading in used items.

It will be locked to whichever carrier sim that first inserted. There was one person that inserted ATT sim first, now it's locked to ATT. Also the phone doesn't tie to your account. I used my brother account to do the upgrade and use the phone on my account. My brother account doesn't have any record of the phone being purchased except BB receipt. It shows the # that I used to do the upgrade.
So the iphones are indeed flex policy locked

Higher management at att and tmobile can unlock the device if they understand what flex lock policy is, same thing happens a lot when someone repaced it under insurance and had the device previously unlocked and now recieved a locked device again. It would be so much easier if their was a USA law that says all devices must be unlocked in the united states, period
