Go to eBay to find an unlocked S9. Most S9's are going for $90-$140. Use this phone as a trade in. Be sure and check the description for the condition of the S9 phones. If the phones are cracked or have spots you won't receive the full $800 promo credit.

They also let me buy out my current 12 Pro Max but trade in the XR in the same transaction which was nice since I can make $200 or so on the secondary market with the 12 if the resale market doesn't drop too much.

The cheapest option for me would take my data plan cost from $70 to $140, which basically means the savings I would get on a new iPhone would be pointless after year 1.
You would be better off eating the cost upfront and saving money in the long run by sticking with the 10GB plan.
