I'm on a grandfathered Sprint plan. Recently upgraded from Pixel 4XL to Z flip 3. Trying to activate they kept saying I needed to switch to a new T-mobile plan. You need to get them to send you a Sprint sim card and that should let you keep your plan... they'll send a T-Mo sim card with the new phone.
Prior to order, you can switch the devise you want to swap with the one on your account.
I swapped my iPhone SE2 for iPhone 7 , $480 vs $600.
