Purchased this in the past from the target deal. Not worth it.

Tray fits weird and the unit stopped working after 6 days. No issue returning it but the traditional design of airfryers seem to be superior

While the underlying process of convection cooking is the same, air fryers aren't identical to traditional convection ovens. Air fryers tend to heat faster than convection ovens due to design differences such as a larger and faster fan. There's convenience factors to consider like being able to shake the basket instead of having to use a pair of oven mitts and a utensil when rotating certain foods. Countertop convection ovens with comparable features (ex. digital display) are in a higher price tier than air fryers.

Air fryers are a good example of not re-inventing the wheel. They build upon an already great product (convection ovens) and fill a niche for people that want a cheap, fast, and easy to use appliance.

By traditional design do you mean the sort of barrel shape that is common? I'd like to get a large air fryer but there seem to be so many that it's difficult to choose.

Yes - I think 5qt is a minimum size. The tray on this one is supposedly 5qts but the usable space is much less. BestBuy just had the insignia analog for $40 - that has been a great one

The brand Power XL has been prone to produce a plethora of failed units due to poor design, improper fitment of parts and they don't stand behind their abhorrent products.

Stay away unless you like to buy 3rd rate products at 4th rate retailers who specialize in selling refurbs to the public. Spend a little more and get more.

I bought a bigger capacity stainless Gourmia air fryer for $50.

Squarish shaped baskets are the best IMO

Doesn't seem like there's enough room for air to circulate. One of those things that seem like a good idea but they are actually worse than the usual design.

5Qt is too small IMO.
We have 3 kids and our 10QT is much better and serves 5 people actually.

I always thought it was a modernized, cheapened, and plasticized version of the halogen convection oven that gained popularity because it was re-marketed as an "air fryer" rather than keeping the convection oven name. 🤷

The Achilles heel of the turbo broiler of old is the halogen bulb. The longevity isn't great. Replacements are a hassle. Air fryers are a logical development. They basically inverted the countertop stove burner element, and added a fan. That element will probably outlast the fan, the thermostat and the switches.

Halogen ovens and air fryers are even further apart than air fryers and traditional convection. Air fryers use heating coils while halogen uses a bulb (infrared energy). Alongside the fact that air fryers have holes inside the basket while halogen uses a bowl, this means air fryers give a crispier finish while halogen produces results closer to a roast. The lid gets really hot on a halogen so you need to protect your hands unlike an air fryer which has a handle that stays cool, allowing you to easily rotate food.

Again, halogen and traditional convection similarly have their unique strengths (for instance, halogen allows you to monitor food through the clear bowl), but saying they're the same thing is like telling someone craving a Honeycrisp that a Granny Smith will taste the same because they're both apples.
