Just a heads up - this company does some major bait and switch. I got the Flume 1 and they have consistently removed features since launch, including the text alerts which were pretty critical as that was one of the only ways to setup multi device alerts.

Removed Brazilian Rainforest Store link per moderator's request - see reason below. Definitely don't go there directly and search, as it would circumvent any share paid back to the site owner.

Yes, but that deal can't be posted on SlickDeals because it's a 3rdparty seller with less than 1000 feedback. The rules don't allow those to be posted here, regardless of whether the seller is the manufacturer or not. I've been told by the moderation staff that the application of this rule is a a private matter and is not to be discussed in the Hot Deals forum, so if there is any concern about the rule, we should take it to Deal Talk or one of the appropriate forums.

I've had this for a few months now after dealing with some ridiculous high water bills.

It's a nice to have and is probably a savior to some, but I've soured a bit on the company after they've introduced this subscription plan. Allegedly, I'm grandfathered into their "detailed" data and AI stuff, but it's the same data that was available prior to their subscription model, so just an annoying money grab IMO.

Setup is surprisingly easy and is seemingly very accurate. Guess overall it's recommended if you're seriously worried about leaks, but you're going to get a lesser product than it was prior to the subscription, or pay more in their subscription to get access to their data metrics.

That's just BS from SD.
I have seen them post iffy deals from shady sellers
(But as long as they get paid.... it's not an issue)

My bank cards were fraudulently charged and I was able to trace it back to SD deals from shady sellers.

Works well BUT can sometimes report major false postives...

Handful of times in the last year it has reported giant false leaks... difficult to know if i should immediately run back home to check...

Might buy an separate remote shutoff valve to remedy the urgency

I got the Flume 1 back in the day through my water company. I liked the idea but have also started to sour on Flume as a company. They knew the first iteration was subject to water damage and they refuse to replace them because it's out of warranty. They admitted that most likely all units will have water damage as the units sit outside/in the ground.

Once subject to water damage, your battery will drain absurdly quickly. They help you troubleshoot it but then tell you they can't do anything about it and only offer to sell you Flume 2.

Unfortunately there aren't a lot of similar devices on the market which means they can dictate the terms. I have decided to not buy anymore of their products.

This is good info, but the Flume is a different device. It doesn't actually read the meter RF like you would with a RTL-SDR. It senses the rotation of the magnetic signature of the internal flow sensors and filters the signal to allow it to independently count the meter mechanism. Reading the meter directly would be just as valuable here, of course, provided that it outputs sufficient precision to detect leaks. (and a fun project as well)
Yeah but Flume is a cloud-based device which means it's literally trash when they go bankrupt or just decide to stop supporting whichever model you have. It also charges a recurring subscription fee for some features.

You were not charged by shady 3rd party Amazon sellers. They don't have the ability to do that.

Can you install this yourself or do you need to hire a handyman to install?

Thanks OP. I had bought this from Amazon on 9/11. Guess I'm buying and returning this one.

I'm really miffed at Flume though - other folks who had bought it at $199 have reported that they had minute by minute data. I can only access usage within the hour. When I contacted support, they told me that because of the lower price, unless you pay for the $50 premium access, you cannot see per minute real time usage.

Also, usage seems to be delayed by 1-2 min where it lags in reporting running water.

It works with my meter. In the Palos Verdes area with SoCal Water. Hope they don't make me take it off.

No, this will not turn off water. It is a strap on device which reads the electromagnetic fields from the existing city flow meter. The use case for this is it will read your water and tell you when you are using more, from there you have to shut off the source. There is a competing product called Flo by Moen. It is ~$400 on Amazon. It has an auto shut off feature, but it must be installed on your main pipe. So you will need a licensed plumber (or be handy enough to do it yourself). Some insurance companies do offer discounts on Flo by Moen as it does have the potential to save you thousands in water damage.
I have a commercial shut off valve with water sensors around the home. Saved my basement once already - leaking water meter connection. It is tied to my alarm system. My home builder and the plumber thought I was crazy when I insisted they install it with my home, and use 1" pipe instead of 1/2 or 3/4. It was expensive, around a thousand bucks installed. HIGHLY recommend having one - and having heat sensors in the kitchen, garage, above water heater and furnace. They are cheap - couple of bucks (just a fusible link). I never understood why they don't put them in with alarm systems...
