In Fairbanks right now and not being a d*ck, but I see most people not wearing masks here. It's not surprising they are having high rates of hospitalization here. Feel bad. I wish it was better.

For me, the fear is getting hurt while being out in nature and being put in a medical facility that is already understaffed due to current pandemic.

Everything's great when everything's great. It's the emergencies that are a problem.

Who goes to Alaska to hang around people?

Can't imagine your risk of the coof would be that high if your exploring the great outdoors or taking photos of the beautiful scenery.

Are there that many people with COVID there ? Saw everyone not wearing a mask when the news had a feature on it.

Could go see the aurora I suppose. But the flights on this deal go through June, and June is the best month up there.
Went early June and man was it nice in Denali

Was there 2 weeks ago and noticed the saw thing. They all looked at me like I was crazy.

Side note go eat at Oasis and also Airport Way restaurants. Don't eat at Turtle Club and the Chen Hot Springs is a waste.

Enjoy the incoming snow though!!

We went to Fairbanks and Anchorage in July. Weather was great. We spent a few nights in a cabin in North Pole, hiked around Denali then spent a few days in Anchorage.

If you like to hike, Anchorage and Denali were great.

If you like craft beers, there are a ton of breweries, but state law requires most of them to close at 8.

Seafood was great. The Paris Club in Anchorage was excellent, so was the 49th state brewery.

If I were to go back, I would spend my time in and around Anchorage and Denali. Fairbanks was a smaller town, and there wasn't much to do that we found. We were also there too early in the year for the aurora.
Anchorage Brewing Company is owned by one of the most respected brewers in the U.S., Gabe Fletcher. I know many highly hyped brewers that reach out to Gabe for advice. If you are more into beer than just having a local beer while eating somewhere, it's worth checking out on your next trip if you didn't go there already.

Would anyone be able to tell me the best month and city to see the borealis? Basic question i know, but seems like there are some seasoned visitors here.

Just got back from 10 days in Alaska on Monday. Went to Anchorage, Juneau, Whittier, Seward, Denali, Talkeetna, and many other places in between. Would have loved to have gone to Fairbanks -- maybe next time. It's a really beautiful state and I think everyone owes it to themselves to visit at some point.

One thing we did notice is that the state pretty much shuts down for tourism around mid-late September. This isn't surprising as we were getting some winter weather last week in and around Anchorage... got to drive through some pretty heavy snow. I'm not sure exactly when things open back up, but I would guess late spring. Do some research before booking or you might be disappointed to find a lot of places are not open.

I was in Anchorage last week and was one of the few people wearing a mask in public besides a few waiters and gas station attendants. Not a great place for the COVID conscious unless you're going to fish/hunt off grid

You know you're in the largest state in the Union when you're anchored down in Anchorage.

Just to add some context to this. Fairbanks has one hospital which covers an area the size of Texas. If you get hurt or need care, your options are limited in not only finding a room but getting there. If you are in the south of Alaska, you do have more options but just an fyi.

just like you, i always plan to keep going back to AK. if you missed it this time, be sure to included the trip to Valdez, Homer, and Fairbanks like you mentioned and if you have time, I would try to make it up to the Arctic Circle. nothing to see up there but at least you can say you've been.

Fairbanks. Winter.

Here in Fairbanks, at about latitude 64.8, our aurora viewing "season" is August 21 to April 21. The odds are in your favor between those dates: if the weather is clear and you stay for at least three nights, it's highly likely (though never certain!) that you will see the aurora. From April 22 to August 20 although the sun does set the sky never gets dark enough in Fairbanks to see the aurora even if it was a spectacular display.

The only problem going there is finding a reasonable car rental.
Paying 4 or 5 times the airfare to rent a car for a week it may not be worth it.

Was curious what would be the best time to go.

Figured the last deal (BOGO) would put me there with not much to see during October - December, as far as wildlife. Not sure what to do but take a cruise after I got there would be useful or hit maybe one park or something.

Alaska is on the bucket list in the future.

I'll keep this in mind. IND to Anchorage was $150 round trip for the gauge I used.
Last week of August, 1st week of September is when there are no mosquitos, less tourists and prices aren't crazy high. All that based on pre covid experience.
