In Fairbanks right now and not being a d*ck, but I see most people not wearing masks here. It's not surprising they are having high rates of hospitalization here. Feel bad. I wish it was better.
For me, the fear is getting hurt while being out in nature and being put in a medical facility that is already understaffed due to current pandemic.

Everything's great when everything's great. It's the emergencies that are a problem.
Who goes to Alaska to hang around people?

Can't imagine your risk of the coof would be that high if your exploring the great outdoors or taking photos of the beautiful scenery.

The only problem going there is finding a reasonable car rental.
Paying 4 or 5 times the airfare to rent a car for a week it may not be worth it.

Was curious what would be the best time to go.

Figured the last deal (BOGO) would put me there with not much to see during October - December, as far as wildlife. Not sure what to do but take a cruise after I got there would be useful or hit maybe one park or something.

Alaska is on the bucket list in the future.

I'll keep this in mind. IND to Anchorage was $150 round trip for the gauge I used.

Last week of August, 1st week of September is when there are no mosquitos, less tourists and prices aren't crazy high. All that based on pre covid experience.

Not true. Depending on where you are heading, if you were going to Denali, you are almost certainly going to run into a few.

I can confirm that car rentals are crazy expensive right now in AK. I'm not sure if it's always like that or just a right now thing. But the cheapest I could find last week was about $170/day.

sky high rental car prices for sure but i ended up renting a 4x4 so it was going to be a little bit higher anyway. unfortunately this is a problem you cannot avoid unless you plan to take the alaska train in and out of anc to places like seward or denali.

Fares are cheap because they are off season. Either that or you actually live in Fairbanks and don't want to be in Alaska during the winter. Yes, I have been to Alaska.

Interesting! But are the car rentals still ridiculously priced?

Didn't check. Saw INDY to Anchorage for 150$ a week ago. Probably similar for Chicago. But you'll have to check.

If you plan on hiking in the Alaskan wilderness and want to check in a .44/.454/.500 magnum for personal bear defense, remember NYC is a second amendment free zone unless you're rich and famous. Checking in a legal firearm at LaGuardia, Kennedy or Newark WILL get you cuffed and arrested.

I lived in Alaska for 10 years and I assure you that the photo shown is not from Fairbanks! It's a similar trick that the 'advocates' use to show mountains in ANWR, to invoke an emotional connection to an area which is thousands of square miles of mud. In any case this offer is a real good deal... if you can tolerate the cold. Even if you pick the warmest months to travel it will snow. We got snowed on while camping over Memorial Day weekend, and that was 400 miles south of Fairbanks. Be sure to see the museum at the university, and for the love of everything that is Holy you must have Sunday brunch at Pike's Riverfront. Ask for a table by the windows, and try the Crème Brûlée.
